Union Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will visit Tripura on May 31 to celebrate six years of the PM SVANidhi scheme and review the state’s power sector. The visit will focus on rural electrification, urban grid modernization, infrastructure development, and financial inclusion initiatives.

Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar is scheduled to visit Tripura on May 31 as part of a three-day tour covering several northeastern and eastern states. The visit will mark the sixth anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme and include an extensive review of the state’s power and urban development sectors.

According to official sources, Khattar’s itinerary includes engagements in Mizoram, West Bengal, and Tripura, where he is expected to hold a series of meetings with state government officials and department representatives. The visit underscores the Centre’s continued emphasis on welfare initiatives, infrastructure development, and sustainable economic growth across the region.

A key highlight of the Tripura visit will be a special programme in Agartala commemorating six years of the PM SVANidhi scheme. The event is expected to bring together beneficiaries from across the Northeast, showcasing the achievements and impact of the flagship initiative launched in 2020 to support street vendors affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The PM SVANidhi scheme was introduced to provide affordable working capital loans to street vendors whose livelihoods were disrupted during the pandemic. Over the past six years, the programme has evolved beyond financial assistance to become an important tool for promoting financial inclusion, encouraging digital transactions, and integrating small vendors into the formal economic system. Beneficiaries have reportedly gained improved access to credit facilities and enhanced opportunities for business growth and economic stability.

Apart from participating in the anniversary celebrations, the Union Minister is expected to engage in detailed discussions with the Tripura government regarding the state’s power infrastructure and electricity distribution network. Senior officials from the Power Department are likely to brief him on ongoing projects, future expansion plans, and key challenges facing the sector.

Sources indicate that Khattar may also visit selected power generation and distribution facilities during his stay. The review is expected to focus on strengthening rural electrification efforts, modernizing urban electricity grids, improving transmission and distribution efficiency, and ensuring reliable power supply for households, businesses, and industries.

The assessment comes at a time when infrastructure modernization and uninterrupted electricity supply remain critical priorities for economic development and investment growth in the state. Officials believe the discussions could pave the way for enhanced coordination between the Centre and the state government on future power sector initiatives.

Observers view Khattar’s visit as significant because it combines the celebration of a major social welfare milestone with a comprehensive review of infrastructure development. The dual focus reflects the government’s broader strategy of balancing inclusive social development with investments in critical public infrastructure.

Officials expressed confidence that the visit will further strengthen efforts to promote economic empowerment, improve service delivery, and accelerate sustainable development in Tripura. The engagement is also expected to reinforce the Centre’s commitment to supporting northeastern states through targeted welfare programmes and infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving the quality of life for citizens.
