A shocking incident of domestic violence in North Tripura’s Dharmanagar subdivision has triggered widespread tension and concern after a housewife was allegedly attacked with a machete by her husband following a prolonged family dispute. The seriously injured woman is currently undergoing treatment under close medical supervision, while the accused husband has been arrested by police.
The victim has been identified as Shilpi Sen Barman (45), who had been residing with her husband Joydeb Barman (50) in a rented house at Dewanpasha area under Ward No. 3 of Dharmanagar police station. According to local sources, the couple originally hailed from Kanchanpur and had shifted to the rented accommodation in December last year.
The horrifying incident reportedly took place at around 8:30 pm on Wednesday night inside the rented house. Local residents alleged that frequent quarrels and family disputes had been taking place between the couple for several months. House owner Shashanka Debnath stated that neighbours were well aware of the strained relationship and several meetings had already been organised in an attempt to resolve the ongoing conflict.
Members of a local social organisation, Chetanashakti Samiti, had reportedly been trying to mediate between the husband and wife for several days. However, the situation allegedly worsened after Shilpi Sen Barman recently lodged a complaint at the Dharmanagar Women Police Station regarding missing divorce-related documents. She reportedly accused her husband of hiding the papers. Following the complaint, police allegedly contacted the accused over phone, which further escalated tensions within the family.
According to eyewitnesses, screams were heard from inside the rented house during the night. The son of the house owner rushed to the spot and reportedly found the victim lying in a pool of blood after opening the door. Residents claimed that the accused husband fled from the house immediately after the attack while carrying a sharp machete.
Soon after the incident, local residents informed police, fire service personnel, and public representatives. Former MLA Malina Debnath and local panchayat representatives also rushed to the area after receiving information about the brutal assault.
Fire and emergency service personnel from Dharmanagar conducted a rescue operation and shifted the critically injured woman to Dharmanagar District Hospital. Medical officials stated that the victim suffered a deep cut injury on the backside of her neck, leading to severe blood loss and critical complications.
Doctors later performed complex emergency surgical procedures to stabilise her condition. Hospital sources stated that timely medical intervention played a crucial role in saving her life. Her condition remains critical, and doctors are continuing close observation and treatment.
Meanwhile, Dharmanagar police launched an immediate search operation and successfully arrested the accused husband shortly after the incident. He is currently in police custody, and investigators have started a detailed probe into the circumstances leading to the violent attack.
