BJP appoints first-time MLA Abhishek Debroy as the new Tripura BJP president, replacing Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee. Chief Minister Manik Saha and senior party leaders welcomed the leadership change, highlighting Debroy’s organisational experience and political journey.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday appointed first-time MLA Abhishek Debroy as the new president of the party’s Tripura unit, bringing an end to months of speculation surrounding the crucial organisational post in the northeastern state.
The announcement was made by BJP National General Secretary and party headquarters in-charge Arun Singh through an official statement issued from New Delhi. According to the statement, BJP National president Nitin Nabin approved the appointment of Debroy as the President of BJP Tripura Pradesh.
Debroy replaces Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, who had been serving as the state BJP President. Political observers in Tripura had been closely watching the leadership transition for several months, as several senior leaders and organisational figures were reportedly under consideration for the influential position.
At 44 years old, Abhishek Debroy represents a relatively young face in the party’s leadership structure in Tripura. He was elected for the first time to the Tripura Legislative Assembly from the Matarbari Assembly constituency in Gomati district during the 2023 Assembly elections.
Currently, Debroy serves as a member of the BJP’s Tripura state committee. Before his elevation to the top organisational role in the state, he had also worked as President of the BJP’s Gomati district unit, where he was actively involved in strengthening grassroots organisational activities.

A pharmacy graduate by education, Debroy entered active politics in 2001 through student activism and youth movements. His political career initially began in the Congress ecosystem, where he held several positions in the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and later in the Youth Congress. He joined the BJP in 2017, marking a significant shift in his political journey.
Since joining the saffron party, Debroy steadily expanded his organisational influence within the BJP structure in Tripura. Party insiders believe his experience in youth politics and organisational management played an important role in securing the confidence of the central leadership.
Following the announcement, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, outgoing BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee, ministers, MLAs, and senior party leaders congratulated Debroy on his appointment.
In a message shared on social media platform X, Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed confidence in Debroy’s leadership abilities and organisational vision. He stated that the party would continue to grow stronger under Debroy’s guidance and remain committed to the welfare and development of the people of Tripura.
Saha also personally greeted Debroy at the state party office and reportedly expressed hope that the organisation would gain fresh momentum and direction under the new leadership.
Outgoing state BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee also extended his congratulations to Debroy. In his message, Bhattacharjee said he firmly believed that under Debroy’s leadership and organisational foresight, the party would become stronger and continue to work tirelessly for the welfare of the people.

The appointment comes at an important political phase for the BJP in Tripura as the party focuses on strengthening its organisational network ahead of future electoral challenges and expanding its outreach across the state.
