Complex surgery at Unakoti District Hospital saved a mother and newborn after severe pregnancy complications. Doctors successfully performed a high-risk Caesarean section despite critical bleeding, ensuring the safety of both patients in Kailashahar, Tripura.

A team of doctors and healthcare staff at Unakoti District Hospital successfully carried out a complex emergency surgery that saved the lives of both a young mother and her newborn baby in Tripura’s Kailashahar region.

The 22-year-old pregnant woman, a resident of Kalipur area in Kailashahar, was rushed to the emergency department of Unakoti District Hospital at around 1:30 am on May 20 after she suddenly developed severe bleeding and her condition turned critical. Family members immediately sought urgent medical assistance as her health rapidly deteriorated.

Following initial medical examinations, doctors diagnosed the woman with placenta previa along with antepartum haemorrhage (APH), a dangerous pregnancy-related condition in which the placenta is positioned in the lower part of the uterus. The condition often causes excessive bleeding before childbirth and poses a serious threat to both mother and baby.

Considering the high-risk nature of the case, doctors initially advised the patient’s family to shift her to Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital for advanced treatment facilities. However, the family declined the referral and requested that treatment continue at Unakoti District Hospital.

After assessing the patient’s condition and the urgency of immediate intervention, obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr. Sujit Das decided to perform surgery at the district hospital itself. Under his supervision, the medical team conducted a Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) at around 3:15 am despite the severe complications caused by the placenta’s position and heavy bleeding.

The operation was completed successfully, and the woman safely delivered a healthy baby girl weighing 2.2 kilograms. Both mother and newborn were kept under close observation after surgery, and doctors monitored their recovery carefully over the next few days.

Hospital authorities later confirmed that the condition of both patients improved steadily during treatment. The mother and baby were discharged from the hospital on May 23 after being declared healthy and stable.

The surgical team included anaesthesiologist Dr. Amit Pal alongside Dr. Sujit Das. Nursing Officer Mundipa Debbarma and Operation Theatre Technician Suranjit Das also played vital roles in ensuring the success of the operation.
