Russia launched a massive missile and drone strike on Kyiv after a deadly UAV attack on Starobilsk Professional College in Luhansk that killed 21 students, escalating tensions in the ongoing Ukraine conflict and triggering fresh accusations between Moscow and Western nations.

A large-scale Russian military assault struck Kyiv and surrounding regions on Saturday night, days after a deadly drone attack targeted the Starobilsk Professional College in the Luhansk region. The latest escalation has intensified tensions in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides exchanging accusations over attacks on civilian and military-linked infrastructure.

The Russian Defence Ministry stated on Sunday that the operation involved a wide range of advanced weapon systems, including Oreshnik ballistic missiles, Iskander air-launched ballistic missiles, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, Tsirkon cruise missiles, and multiple types of attack drones. According to the ministry, the strikes were aimed at Ukraine’s defence industry facilities, military infrastructure, and command centers linked to the Ukrainian armed forces.

Russian officials claimed that the attack specifically targeted command posts associated with the Ukrainian Ground Forces and intelligence operations. The ministry also insisted that no civilian infrastructure was intentionally targeted during the operation.

The strikes came shortly after four unmanned aerial vehicles reportedly attacked the Starobilsk Professional College in the Luhansk region. The incident caused widespread destruction at the educational institution, particularly in student dormitories where teenagers were staying at the time of the attack.

Officials in the region confirmed that 21 people were killed and more than 60 others were injured. Authorities stated that there were 86 students, aged between 14 and 18, inside the dormitory complex when the drones struck. Rescue teams and emergency workers spent several hours searching through collapsed sections of the building for survivors and victims.

Elena Markovskaya, spokesperson for the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Luhansk People’s Republic, said the drone strikes caused floors of the dormitory to collapse. She added that emergency personnel completed search operations after recovering the bodies of victims trapped beneath the debris.

Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova accused Western countries of indirectly contributing to the tragedy by supporting drone technology used by Ukraine. Speaking to journalists at the site, she claimed fragments of foreign-made UAV components had been recovered from the wreckage.

According to Russian state media reports, Lantratova appealed to Western governments, arguing that taxpayer-funded military assistance was being used in attacks that resulted in civilian deaths, including teenagers staying at the college dormitory.

The latest wave of missile and drone attacks marks another dangerous phase in the conflict, which has increasingly seen long-range weapons and aerial systems deployed against strategic and symbolic targets. Kyiv authorities have not yet issued a detailed response regarding the Russian allegations surrounding the Starobilsk incident.

Military analysts believe the use of hypersonic and ballistic missile systems demonstrates Moscow’s intention to project overwhelming force following the college attack. At the same time, concerns continue to grow internationally over the rising civilian toll and the expanding scale of attacks across both frontline and urban regions.

The renewed violence is expected to draw further international attention as diplomatic efforts to reduce hostilities remain stalled amid continued battlefield escalation.
