Marta Kostyuk advanced at the French Open after learning a missile strike landed near her Kyiv family home. The Ukrainian star battled fear and emotion to secure a straight-sets victory in Paris amid the ongoing war crisis.

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk produced a courageous performance at the French Open on Sunday, defeating Russian qualifier Oksana Selekhmeteva in straight sets while dealing with the emotional impact of a missile strike near her family home in Kyiv.

The 22-year-old secured a composed 6-2, 6-3 victory at Roland Garros, but the result carried far greater emotional significance than a routine first-round win. Only hours before stepping onto the court in Paris, Kostyuk learned that a missile had landed approximately 100 meters from the residence where several of her family members were staying in the Ukrainian capital.

According to Kostyuk, the attack came dangerously close to her mother, sister and grandmother’s sister, leaving her deeply shaken before the match even began. Speaking after the victory, she admitted that the latest strike was among the most terrifying moments her family has faced since the war began.

She revealed that thoughts of the attack repeatedly entered her mind throughout the match. Despite maintaining control on court, the emotional strain remained impossible to ignore. Kostyuk said she spent much of the morning feeling physically sick while imagining how devastating the outcome could have been if the missile had landed slightly closer.

The Ukrainian player explained that the early 11 a.m. match start may have helped her remain focused, as it gave her little time to fully process the traumatic news before competing. What would normally be pre-match nerves at a Grand Slam tournament suddenly felt insignificant compared to the fear and uncertainty her loved ones were experiencing in Kyiv.

Kostyuk later confirmed that her family members were physically safe but emotionally exhausted after another sleepless night caused by air raid threats and explosions across the city. She acknowledged that such nights have become a painful reality for many Ukrainians trying to adapt to life during the ongoing conflict.

For several years, Kostyuk has openly discussed the psychological burden carried by Ukrainian athletes competing internationally while their homeland remains under attack. Sunday’s emotional victory once again highlighted the difficult balance between professional sport and personal trauma faced by many players from Ukraine.

The world No. 18 described the repeated overnight missile strikes as mentally exhausting, adding that fear, frustration and anger have become constant emotions for people living through the war. Even while competing at one of tennis’ most prestigious tournaments, she said the situation back home remains impossible to separate from life on court.

Despite the emotional pressure, Kostyuk’s recent form on clay courts continues to impress. Her victory in Paris extended her clay-court winning streak to 12 matches following a remarkable title-winning run in Madrid last week. The consistency has strengthened her position as one of the rising forces on the women’s tour heading deeper into the European clay season.

However, on a day when tennis often felt secondary, Kostyuk’s resilience became the defining story. Her performance at Roland Garros was not only a sporting achievement but also a powerful reflection of determination under unimaginable emotional strain.
