Tripura HC Chief Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao warned students against excessive dependence on digital gadgets, stressing discipline, focus and hard work during a felicitation ceremony for CBSE toppers at Auxilium Girls’ School in Tripura.

Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court, Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao, on Saturday expressed concern over the growing dependence of students on mobile phones and digital platforms, cautioning that excessive use of electronic gadgets could negatively affect concentration, memory and learning abilities.

He made these remarks while addressing a felicitation ceremony organized by Auxilium Girls’ School to honour CBSE Class X and XII toppers for their outstanding academic achievements.

Speaking before students, teachers and parents, Justice Rao stressed that technology should not replace discipline, dedication and focused study in the pursuit of education. He observed that modern students are increasingly becoming dependent on smartphones, social media and digital entertainment, which often distract them from academic goals and personal development.

The Chief Justice pointed out that prolonged exposure to electronic media has been scientifically linked to declining attention spans, weaker memory retention and reduced capacity to absorb knowledge effectively. According to him, academic excellence can only be achieved through consistent effort, effective time management and the ability to remain determined under pressure.

He reminded students that education is not merely about securing high marks in examinations, but about building character and preparing oneself for future challenges in life. Encouraging students to stay committed to their goals, Justice Rao said that shortcuts never lead to lasting success and that perseverance remains the foundation of achievement.

“In school, you’re taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you’re given a test that teaches you a lesson,” he said while motivating students to embrace both success and challenges as opportunities for learning and growth.

Justice Rao also urged parents to avoid placing unnecessary academic pressure on children during examinations. Instead, he emphasized the importance of emotional support, encouragement and creating a positive learning environment at home. He stated that students perform better when families focus on guidance and confidence-building rather than fear and unrealistic expectations.

During the programme, the Chief Justice congratulated the successful students for their hard work, dedication and discipline. He also acknowledged the vital contribution of teachers and guardians in shaping the academic success and overall development of the students.

The felicitation ceremony witnessed the participation of school authorities, parents and students, who applauded the achievements of the meritorious candidates. Several students who excelled in different streams of the CBSE examinations were honoured during the event for their exceptional performance.
