Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has sought a detailed report from the DGP over allegations of sexual misconduct against an SP-rank police officer. The Commission observed that the incident could damage public trust and credibility in the state police administration.
A report has been sought by the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) from the Director General of Police (DGP) regarding allegations of sexual misconduct involving a Superintendent of Police-rank officer, following media reports that raised serious concerns over police accountability and public trust.
The Commission, headed by Justice Arindam Lodh, took cognisance of the issue after reports were published in two vernacular newspapers on May 17. According to the Commission, the allegations, if found true, could negatively impact the image and credibility of the police administration in the state.
As per the order issued by the THRC, the media reports alleged that a 2010-batch Tripura Police Service officer holding the rank of Superintendent of Police had allegedly absconded after being accused of misconduct involving a female police officer.
The reports further claimed that the accused officer had allegedly entered the residential quarter of the woman police officer after her husband had left the premises. It was alleged that the officer attempted to establish a sexual relationship with the woman officer. However, after the woman officer reportedly raised an alarm, the accused officer allegedly fled from the location.
The Commission observed that the reports circulating in the media did not clearly mention whether any formal police case or departmental proceeding had been initiated in connection with the incident. This absence of clarity prompted the rights body to seek a factual and detailed report directly from the state police chief before taking further action.
In its observation, the Commission stated that such allegations send a disturbing message to society and may create doubts regarding the integrity and professionalism of law enforcement personnel. The order also highlighted that public confidence in the police force could suffer if such accusations remain unaddressed or unclear.
“The allegations, if true, give a bad signal to society and raise questions regarding the credibility of police officers,” the Commission reportedly observed while directing the authorities to provide complete details of the matter.
Before formally proceeding with the case, the THRC considered it necessary to obtain verified information from the Director General of Police. The Commission has therefore instructed the DGP, Tripura, to submit a detailed report regarding the allegations mentioned in the newspaper reports.
Copies of the relevant newspaper clippings along with the Commission’s order have also been forwarded to the DGP for necessary action and examination. Officials familiar with the matter said the Commission intends to review the findings carefully once the report is submitted.
The matter has now been listed again after 20 days, during which the DGP is expected to furnish the requested report before the Commission. The case has drawn attention due to the serious nature of the allegations and the possible implications for the image of the police department in Tripura.
