Scarlett Johansson praised Adam Driver while discussing their reunion in upcoming crime thriller Paper Tiger, recalling their intense collaboration in Marriage Story and sharing behind-the-scenes moments from the James Gray-directed film set.
Actor Scarlett Johansson has shared her excitement about reuniting with Adam Driver for the upcoming crime thriller Paper Tiger, marking their first collaboration since the critically acclaimed 2019 film Marriage Story. The Hollywood stars, whose emotional performances in the Noah Baumbach-directed drama earned widespread praise, are once again teaming up in a project expected to deliver intense drama and suspense.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Johansson expressed admiration for Driver and revealed how much she values working alongside him. “I would’ve loved to have had even more scenework with him, I love working with him,” Johansson said while discussing their reunion on the new film.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker James Gray, Paper Tiger is set in late 1980s New York and follows the story of the Pearl family as their peaceful life is disrupted by dangerous criminal connections. Johansson plays Hester Pearl, the wife of Irwin Pearl, as the couple attempts to protect their two sons after Irwin’s brother Gary becomes involved with the Russian mafia, placing the family in serious danger.
The actress also opened up about her experience filming the thriller and spoke warmly about her bond with co-star Miles Teller during production. Johansson recalled temporarily leaving the set to promote Jurassic and said her absence became a running joke among the cast.
“He’s so unexpectedly tender,” Johansson said while speaking about Teller. “I went away for a couple of weeks to do the press for Jurassic — I felt crazy to leave, but I had to go — and when I was gone, I’d get photographs of my makeup station from Miles and he’d be like, ‘Where’s Hester?’”
Johansson and Driver previously captivated audiences in Marriage Story, a deeply emotional romantic drama centered on a married couple navigating divorce and a difficult custody battle over their son. The film showcased both actors delivering powerful and emotionally charged performances that resonated strongly with viewers and critics alike.
The Netflix release became one of the most talked-about films of 2019 and earned major recognition during awards season. Marriage Story collected four wins at the Gotham Awards and further strengthened the reputations of Johansson and Driver as two of Hollywood’s most respected performers.
Before the film’s release, Johansson had spoken candidly about the demanding nature of filming some of the movie’s most emotionally intense scenes. She recalled spending days shooting explosive arguments with Driver, describing the experience as emotionally exhausting.
“We spent two entire days screaming at each other, brutally screaming and fighting for two full days,” Johansson said in an earlier interview with As If magazine.
Despite the intensity, Johansson emphasized that Driver’s talent and commitment made the process meaningful and rewarding. “It was exhausting, but if I didn’t have as strong an actor as Adam to take all the stuff I was giving him I would have been lost,” she explained.
The actress added that collaboration with fellow performers remains one of the most important aspects of her craft. “For me, working with other actors is a really important part of what I do … it’s everything,” Johansson said.
