Racing Santander secured historic promotion to La Liga after 14 years with a commanding 4-1 victory over Real Valladolid. Andres Martin starred with two goals as the club completed a remarkable comeback from Spain’s third tier to top-flight football glory.
Spanish football club Racing Santander completed a remarkable comeback story on Saturday after securing promotion to La Liga for the first time in 14 years. The historic achievement came after a convincing 4-1 home victory over Real Valladolid in front of jubilant supporters at El Sardinero Stadium.
The win confirmed Racing Santander’s return to Spain’s top-flight competition with two rounds still remaining in the Segunda Division season. The club now sits seven points clear at the top of the standings, guaranteeing one of the two automatic promotion places available from the second division.
Leading scorer Andres Martin played a decisive role in the promotion-clinching performance by scoring twice against Valladolid. His impressive contribution was supported by goals from Asier Villalibre and Suleiman Camera as Racing overwhelmed their opponents in a dominant attacking display.
Racing Santander’s promotion campaign has been built on fearless attacking football throughout the season. The team has scored an impressive 85 goals in 40 league matches, the highest tally in the division. While the side has conceded 59 goals, their offensive strength has consistently allowed them to outscore opponents and maintain their place at the top of the table.
The emotional significance of the achievement was clear after the final whistle as head coach Jose Alberto struggled to contain his emotions during post-match interviews.
“I’m very emotional, this is for the club and my family. I’m so proud, but I can hardly speak,” the coach said after the match.
Winger Inigo Vicente dedicated the promotion to the loyal supporters who continued backing the club during some of the darkest moments in its recent history.
“This is for the fans. They were here for the club when it nearly disappeared. But we have been the best team in the division from start to finish,” Vicente stated.
Midfielder Peio Canales, who joined Racing on loan from Athletic Bilbao, also praised the team’s consistency and determination throughout the season.
“I came here on loan for a reason, and what we are living here is very special. We have played well all season and showed personality, even when we have had difficult moments,” Canales commented.
The promotion marks the end of a difficult chapter in Racing Santander’s history. During their 14-year absence from La Liga, the club experienced serious sporting and financial struggles, even dropping into Spain’s third tier at one point. However, Racing gradually rebuilt its squad and stability before returning to the second division in 2022.
Their rapid rise since then has now culminated in a memorable return to elite Spanish football, where they will once again compete against the country’s biggest clubs next season.
Attention will now shift to the remaining promotion battle in the Segunda Division. One direct promotion place is still available, while another La Liga spot will be determined through the promotion playoffs involving the teams finishing between third and sixth positions in the standings.
