A powerful nor’wester storm devastates Sabroom, damaging homes, uprooting trees, and disrupting power supply. Over 59 houses affected as disaster management teams respond swiftly. Restoration efforts underway amid heavy losses in agriculture and infrastructure.

Severe weather conditions battered parts of southern Tripura, leaving a trail of destruction and disrupting daily life for hundreds of residents. A powerful nor’wester storm struck Sabroom sub-division late Sunday night, triggering widespread damage to infrastructure, homes, and agricultural land.

The sudden storm, marked by intense gusty winds and heavy rainfall, uprooted trees and snapped multiple electricity poles across the region. As a result, large areas were plunged into darkness, with power supply remaining disrupted for several hours. The storm also caused significant damage to rubber plantations and betel leaf farms, affecting local livelihoods that depend heavily on agriculture.

In several locations, the impact was severe enough to damage residential properties. In Poangbari Block, a large tree collapsed onto the home of a local resident, narrowly sparing the family from serious injury. Another similar incident occurred in the Rajnagar area, where a house sustained heavy structural damage after being struck by a falling tree. Reports of partially damaged homes continued to emerge from different parts of the subdivision.

Electricity infrastructure bore a major brunt of the storm. Officials confirmed that more than 30 electric poles were damaged, leading to a near-complete blackout across the subdivision from Sunday evening into Monday. Emergency restoration efforts were launched immediately, with technical teams working around the clock to bring the situation under control. By Monday evening, power supply had been partially restored in key areas, including the Sabroom Nagar Panchayat region, while full restoration is expected within the next few days.

Authorities responded swiftly to manage the crisis and restore normalcy. Disaster management teams were mobilized overnight to clear debris and reopen critical roadways. Fallen trees blocking major roads in Sabroom town were removed promptly to ensure the resumption of vehicular movement. On Monday morning, multiple teams were deployed across affected areas to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts.

Preliminary assessments indicate that at least 59 houses have been partially damaged due to the storm. However, officials have stated that a comprehensive survey is still underway to determine the full scale of destruction. The financial losses are expected to be substantial, with early private estimates suggesting damages could amount to several crores of rupees.

Local administration officials have assured residents that relief measures will be implemented promptly. Data collection on affected households has already begun, and necessary steps are being taken to provide assistance and support to those impacted by the disaster.

The incident highlights the recurring threat posed by seasonal storms in the region and underscores the need for improved infrastructure resilience and disaster preparedness to minimize future losses.
