IMD issues heatwave alert in Tripura as temperatures rise above 36°C with high humidity. Authorities warn of heatstroke risks and urge precautions including hydration, avoiding sun exposure, and wearing light clothing during extreme weather conditions.

A spell of intense heat coupled with high humidity is set to grip Tripura over the coming days, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a heatwave alert across multiple districts. Officials have warned residents to prepare for uncomfortable weather conditions that could pose significant health risks if precautionary measures are not followed.

According to the latest forecast, daytime temperatures are expected to touch or exceed 36°C in several parts of the state, remaining 2 to 4 degrees above the seasonal average. On Wednesday, Tripura recorded a maximum temperature of 36.6°C, approximately 3.3 degrees higher than normal, making it the hottest day recorded in April so far. Meteorologists have indicated that this trend may continue over the next three days, with little respite expected.

The combination of high temperature and elevated humidity levels is likely to worsen the discomfort index, making conditions feel even hotter than recorded readings. Experts have cautioned that such weather can interfere with the body’s natural cooling system, as sweat does not evaporate efficiently in humid environments. This increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke, dehydration, heat cramps, and exhaustion.

Health authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, especially during peak afternoon hours when solar radiation is strongest. Children, elderly individuals, and those with pre-existing medical conditions are considered particularly vulnerable during such extreme weather conditions.

In response to the alert, the IMD has issued a series of safety advisories aimed at reducing the risk of heat-related complications. Residents are advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between late morning and early evening hours. Staying hydrated is crucial, with experts recommending frequent intake of water even in the absence of thirst.

People venturing outdoors are encouraged to wear loose, lightweight cotton clothing in light colors to reflect heat. Carrying drinking water while travelling is strongly recommended, along with the use of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or traditional cooling beverages such as buttermilk, lemon water, rice water, and lassi to maintain electrolyte balance.

Additionally, protective measures like using sunglasses or protective eyewear can help minimize the harmful effects of prolonged sun exposure. Authorities have stressed that following these guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of serious health complications during this period of extreme weather.

The current heatwave alert underscores the broader impact of rising temperatures across northeastern India, as seasonal variations continue to intensify. While no immediate rainfall relief has been forecast, officials are closely monitoring weather patterns and will issue further updates as necessary.

Residents are advised to stay informed through official bulletins and prioritize safety measures until conditions stabilize.
