Pradyot Kishore Debbarman asserts “community power” will defeat BJP in TTAADC polls, highlighting indigenous rights, land demands, and political autonomy. TMP targets tribal unity as key force in Tripura council elections amid rising political tensions.
In a politically charged atmosphere ahead of the crucial Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman has declared that the strength of “community power” will decisively defeat the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
Addressing a massive rally on Wednesday, Debbarman emphasized that the upcoming elections are not merely a political contest but a fight to protect the identity, rights, and institutional autonomy of indigenous communities in Tripura. He accused the BJP of attempting to take control of the TTAADC through financial influence and administrative pressure.
“This election is being fought to protect TTAADC and the rights of our people,” Debbarman asserted, calling on tribal voters to unite and resist what he described as external interference in their democratic institution.
The TMP chief also directly challenged Chief Minister Manik Saha to a public debate, intensifying the political rhetoric ahead of the polls. “You challenged me, and now I challenge you to come for an open debate,” he said, accusing the state leadership of targeting Tiprasa leaders and suppressing opposition voices.
Debbarman further claimed that tribal youth and women would emerge as a decisive force in the elections, mobilizing grassroots support to “break the arrogance” of the ruling party. He alleged that attempts were being made to weaken TMP through financial inducements, with some leaders switching sides for monetary benefits. However, he warned that such defectors would eventually be discarded once their usefulness ends.
Highlighting his political stance, Debbarman revealed that he had rejected internal suggestions to form an alliance with the BJP for administrative control. “My loyalty lies with the people, and that is why I am choosing to fight independently,” he stated.
The TMP has placed several key demands at the center of its campaign, including stronger land rights protections, direct funding mechanisms to the council, enhanced legislative representation, and expanded opportunities in education and government employment for tribal youth.
In a separate rally, Debbarman raised concerns over what he described as a plan by the BJP to alter the identity of the council. He alleged that the party intends to remove the word “Tribal” from the TTAADC and rename it as the Tripura Autonomous Territorial Council, as mentioned in its manifesto. According to him, such a move would dilute the cultural and political significance of the institution.
He also accused the government of selectively targeting TMP workers by implicating them in multiple legal cases, calling it a strategy to intimidate the opposition.
Despite the sharp criticism, Debbarman urged voters and party supporters to maintain peace and uphold democratic values during the election process. He appealed to all stakeholders to respect candidates across party lines and ensure that the polls are conducted in a fair and peaceful manner.
