Bangladesh’s Awami League condemns Anti-Terrorism Amendment Bill 2026 banning party activities, calling it a disgraceful attack on democracy, political rights, and constitutional values under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, Bangladesh’s ruling legacy party, the Awami League, has strongly condemned a newly passed parliamentary bill that effectively bans its activities, describing the move as a “disgraceful act” and a direct assault on democratic principles.

The controversy erupted after Bangladesh’s parliament passed the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2026 on Wednesday. The legislation retained the provisions of the earlier Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance 2025, introduced by the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The ordinance had already imposed sweeping restrictions on the Awami League, barring all political activities until ongoing legal proceedings conclude.

Legal Clampdown and Political Fallout

Under the amended law, the Awami League and its senior leaders face trial at the International Crimes Tribunal. Until the judicial process is completed, the party remains prohibited from organizing rallies, participating in elections, or engaging in any political operations.

The Awami League has sharply criticized the decision, accusing the parliament of undermining its own legitimacy. In a strongly worded statement, the party said the National Parliament had been “disgraced” and warned that a “shameful chapter” had been written in the country’s political history.

The party further alleged that the parliament, formed through what it described as a “so-called election,” had abandoned democratic values by targeting a historic political institution. The Awami League played a central role in the country’s independence movement during the Bangladesh Liberation War, making the ban symbolically and politically significant.

Accusations of Democratic Backsliding

The Awami League argued that the legislation goes far beyond a legal measure against a single party. According to its statement, the bill represents a broader attack on democratic practices, fair political competition, and fundamental civil rights.

“The National Parliament is a sacred institution representing the spirit of democracy,” the statement read. “Yet it has been used to establish the dominance of anti-independence and anti-state forces.”

The party warned that such actions could push Bangladesh toward an authoritarian or one-party system, eroding decades of democratic progress. It emphasized that banning a political organization rooted in the country’s history and struggle amounts to “hostility toward history itself.”

Concerns Over Stability and Rule of Law

Highlighting the potential consequences, the Awami League stated that repression through legal instruments would not provide lasting solutions. Instead, it argued, such measures risk deepening political divisions, fueling instability, and weakening democratic culture.

Political analysts have also raised concerns about the precedent set by the legislation. Restricting a major political force through legal provisions could significantly reshape Bangladesh’s political landscape, potentially limiting opposition voices and altering electoral dynamics.

Call for Nationwide Democratic Resistance

In response to the ban, the Awami League has called on citizens, civil society groups, professional organizations, and youth to unite in defense of democratic rights. The party urged collective action to safeguard freedom of expression, the rule of law, and political pluralism.

“The victory of the people and democracy is inevitable,” the statement concluded, signaling the party’s intention to continue its political struggle despite the restrictions.

Uncertain Road Ahead

As Bangladesh navigates this contentious political moment, the future remains uncertain. The outcome of the trials at the International Crimes Tribunal and the broader public response to the ban will likely determine the trajectory of the country’s democracy.

For now, the passage of the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2026 has not only intensified political polarization but also sparked a broader debate over the balance between legal accountability and democratic freedom in Bangladesh.
