Tripura Police arrested two individuals for sharing AI-generated objectionable images of Chief Minister Manik Saha. The viral social media case has triggered legal action, raising concerns over misuse of artificial intelligence and digital content regulation in the state.
In a crackdown on the misuse of artificial intelligence and social media platforms, police in Tripura have arrested two individuals for allegedly circulating objectionable AI-generated images of Chief Minister Manik Saha.
According to police officials, the accused have been identified as Deepak Chandra Paul, a resident of Narsingarh, and Mangal Kaloi from Nandan Nagar. Both individuals were taken into custody during separate late-night operations conducted by law enforcement authorities.
Paul was apprehended in the early hours of Saturday, while Kaloi was arrested following a raid at his residence around 3 am. Officials stated that both suspects were allegedly involved in sharing artificially generated images depicting the Chief Minister in an objectionable manner. These images reportedly spread rapidly across multiple social media platforms, drawing widespread attention and concern.
Police sources confirmed that the content in question was created using advanced artificial intelligence tools, raising serious questions about the growing misuse of AI technology in digital misinformation campaigns. The circulation of such manipulated images not only violates legal provisions but also poses a threat to public order and the dignity of individuals.
Following the viral spread of the images, police teams launched swift operations to track down the origin and distribution network of the content. Both accused were detained from their respective residences and brought to the police station for detailed interrogation.
During questioning, investigators focused on identifying the source of the AI-generated images and understanding how they were disseminated online. Authorities are also probing whether other individuals or groups were involved in creating or amplifying the content. Officials indicated that the investigation remains ongoing, and more arrests could follow if additional links are established.
Law enforcement agencies have invoked appropriate legal provisions under relevant sections dealing with cybercrime, defamation, and the misuse of digital platforms. While specific charges have not been publicly detailed, officials emphasized that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of engaging in such activities.
In a public advisory, police urged citizens to exercise caution while sharing content on social media, especially material generated using artificial intelligence. They warned that forwarding or amplifying objectionable or misleading content could attract legal consequences.
The incident underscores the urgent need for greater awareness and regulation surrounding AI-generated media, particularly as such technologies become increasingly accessible. Experts have repeatedly highlighted the risks associated with deepfakes and manipulated visuals, which can easily be used to spread misinformation or harm reputations.
