TSR deploy 10 companies to strengthen election security in West Bengal and Assam Assembly polls 2026, ensuring free, fair, and peaceful voting amid tight schedules, strategic deployments, and heightened national security coordination.

In a move to bolster election security, the elite Tripura State Rifles (TSR) has been mobilized for deployment in the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam. Officials confirmed on Saturday that the deployment follows a formal request from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), underscoring the importance of maintaining law and order during the high-stakes electoral process.

According to a senior Tripura Police official, ten TSR companies, comprising 778 personnel, will be dispatched to the two poll-bound states. These personnel will play a critical role in ensuring security arrangements both before and during the elections. The deployment highlights the growing reliance on well-trained paramilitary forces to safeguard democratic processes in sensitive regions.

Strategic Deployment Ahead of Key Elections

The Assembly elections in West Bengal will be conducted in two phases, with voting scheduled for April 23 and April 29 across its 294 constituencies. Meanwhile, Assam’s 126-member Assembly will go to polls on April 9. The counting of votes for both states is set for May 4, making this a crucial period for election authorities and security agencies alike.

Officials revealed that two ad hoc battalions of the TSR, each comprising five companies, will be stationed across the two states. These units, categorized as India Reserve Battalions, are specifically trained for deployment anywhere in the country as per MHA requirements.

The battalions will be led by senior commandants Amarjit Debbarma and Alok Bhattacharjee, both of whom bring extensive experience in handling election-related security operations.

Balancing Internal and External Security Needs

Interestingly, the MHA had initially requested the deployment of 25 TSR companies. However, the Tripura government expressed reservations due to its own impending electoral commitments, including the politically significant Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections and a by-election in the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency.

The TTAADC elections are scheduled for April 12, while the Dharmanagar by-election will take place on April 9. These simultaneous electoral events necessitated a careful balancing act by the state government to ensure adequate security within Tripura while contributing to national election duties.

Proven Track Record in Election Security

The TSR has established itself as a reliable and efficient force in election security operations across India. With 14 battalions—11 of which are designated as India Reserve Battalions—the force has been deployed in more than a dozen states over the years.

During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, TSR personnel were stationed in multiple states, including Maharashtra, Bihar, Odisha, and Himachal Pradesh, where they played a vital role in maintaining peace during polling.

Beyond elections, the TSR has also contributed to major national events such as the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where its personnel were entrusted with critical security responsibilities.

Counter-Insurgency Expertise Adds Value

One of the defining strengths of the TSR lies in its expertise in counter-insurgency operations. The force has been instrumental in curbing decades-long insurgency in Tripura, earning a reputation for professionalism and operational efficiency.

This experience makes TSR personnel particularly well-suited for deployment in election environments that may be prone to unrest or security challenges. Their presence is expected to enhance voter confidence and ensure smooth polling processes.

Nationwide Presence and Expanding Role

Apart from election duties, TSR units are actively deployed across the country in various capacities. Two battalions, comprising nearly 2,000 personnel, have been stationed in the national capital under the Delhi Police since 2019. Additionally, TSR personnel have been deployed with South Eastern Coalfields Limited in Chhattisgarh since 2022.

Another battalion is currently tasked with providing dedicated security to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation drilling sites in Tripura, highlighting the force’s versatility in handling both civil and industrial security assignments.

Ensuring Free and Fair Elections

The deployment of TSR in West Bengal and Assam reflects a broader strategy by the central government to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections. With rising political stakes and voter participation, robust security arrangements have become indispensable.
