Tripura intensifies its anti-drug crackdown as authorities destroy cannabis plantations across 12,479 hectares in three years. Over 5.24 crore ganja plants eliminated, narcotics worth ₹54 crore seized, reinforcing the state’s strong fight against illegal drug cultivation.
The Tripura government has destroyed cannabis plantations covering 12,479.98 hectares of land across the state over the past three years as part of its intensified campaign against illegal drug cultivation. The information was revealed in the state assembly by the Minister in charge of the Home Department through a written reply.
The disclosure came in response to a query raised by CPIM MLA Nayan Sarkar, seeking details about the state’s anti-narcotics operations and the extent of cannabis cultivation eradicated during the period under review.
According to the government’s response, law enforcement agencies carried out extensive operations targeting illegal cannabis farming across multiple districts. A detailed police station-wise dataset was also provided to the assembly, highlighting the scale and geographical spread of the enforcement drives.
Officials stated that 793 anti-ganja operations were conducted by the state police between 2022 and 2025. These large-scale drives led to the destruction of 5,24,25,791 cannabis plants and the seizure of narcotic substances valued at approximately ₹54 crore in the illegal market.
Authorities emphasized that the confiscated drugs were disposed of following strict legal procedures. Acting under court directives, the seized cannabis was destroyed under the supervision of the High Level Drug Disposal Committee (HLDDC) and the State Level Drug Disposal Committee (SLDDC) to ensure transparency and compliance with established protocols.
“The disposal process took place at an isolated site in the Bodhjungnagar industrial area near Agartala. The contraband was destroyed by burning in the presence of committee chairpersons and members to ensure adherence to government guidelines,” the official response stated.
During the three-year period, the Drug Disposal Committee oversaw the destruction of 1,33,418.625 kilograms of seized ganja, reflecting the large volume of narcotics intercepted during enforcement operations.
The government also informed the assembly that two individuals were arrested for allegedly cultivating cannabis illegally during the same period. In addition, 15 people were taken into custody for allegedly obstructing law enforcement personnel while they were conducting anti-cannabis eradication drives.
Police have already filed charge sheets against the 15 accused persons, and the cases are currently under trial in various courts. Authorities indicated that strict legal action will continue against individuals involved in illegal drug cultivation or those attempting to hinder enforcement operations.
District-wise data showed that Sepahijala district recorded the highest number of cannabis plantation destructions, highlighting it as a major hotspot for illegal ganja cultivation in the state. Security agencies have intensified surveillance and field operations in such vulnerable regions to prevent the re-emergence of narcotics farming.
The Tripura government has repeatedly emphasized that its anti-drug campaign forms a critical part of a broader strategy to combat narcotics trafficking and safeguard youth from drug addiction. Officials said coordination between police, administrative authorities, and judicial bodies has strengthened enforcement efforts.
