Tripura records steady growth in tourist arrivals as the government announces major tourism projects including houseboats at Dumboor Lake, Amar Sagar waterfront development and the 51 Shakti Peethas complex, aiming to boost tourism infrastructure and attract national and international visitors.
The state of Tripura has witnessed a steady increase in tourist arrivals in recent years, reflecting the impact of various initiatives undertaken by the state government to strengthen tourism infrastructure and promote the region as an emerging travel destination in Northeast India.
This information was shared by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy while presenting the State Budget for the financial year 2026–27 in the Legislative Assembly on Monday. During his budget speech, the minister highlighted the progress made in the tourism sector and outlined several upcoming projects aimed at further expanding tourism activities across the state.
Increase in Tourist Footfall
According to the budget statement, Tripura has experienced a notable rise in visitor numbers over the past few years. Tourist arrivals in the state reached 6,50,772 during 2025–26 (till February 2026), compared to 5,29,815 tourists in 2018–19. The minister noted that this growth reflects the success of the government’s efforts to improve tourism infrastructure and promote the state’s cultural, religious and natural attractions.
Tourism Development Projects with ADB Support
The government is currently implementing several tourism development initiatives with financial support from the Asian Development Bank under an Externally Aided Project (EAP). These projects are primarily aimed at:
- Improving tourism infrastructure and visitor facilities
- Enhancing road connectivity to major tourist destinations
- Promoting eco-tourism and sustainable tourism practices
The projects are expected to help unlock the tourism potential of various scenic and culturally significant locations across Tripura.
New Houseboat Service at Dumboor Lake
To further strengthen tourism in the state, the government plans to introduce a houseboat service at Dumboor Lake during the financial year 2026–27. The initiative is expected to attract tourists interested in nature tourism and water-based recreational activities, while also boosting local economic opportunities.

Major Infrastructure Projects
The state government has also proposed several major tourism infrastructure projects to enhance visitor experiences and promote Tripura’s natural attractions.
One of the key projects is the waterfront development at Amar Sagar Lake, which will be undertaken with an estimated investment of ₹40 crore. The project aims to transform the lake area into a modern tourist attraction with improved amenities and recreational facilities.
Another significant initiative involves the development of the Twin Islands located within Dumboor Lake, with an estimated project cost of ₹30 crore. Both these projects will be implemented with financial support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).
Development of Brahammakunda as Tourist Destination
The government has also proposed the development of Brahammakunda as a tourist destination, with an allocation of ₹13 crore for the financial year 2026–27. The initiative aims to improve infrastructure and facilities at the site to attract more visitors.
Focus on Religious Tourism
Among the major upcoming tourism projects is the construction of a replica complex of the 51 Shakti Peethas at Banduar near Udaipur. The project is being developed at an estimated cost of ₹97.70 crore and is expected to significantly boost religious tourism in the region by attracting pilgrims and visitors from across the country.
Promotion Through Tourism Events
In addition to infrastructure development, the government has also taken steps to promote the state through tourism events. In December 2025, Tripura hosted the Unity Promo Fest 2025, a major winter tourism event aimed at showcasing the state’s tourism potential.
The festival brought together 125 tour operator delegates from 22 states across India and four foreign countries, providing an important platform to promote Tripura’s tourist destinations at both national and international levels.
Encouraging Progress in Tourism Sector
Highlighting the overall progress made during 2025–26, the Finance Minister noted that the tourism sector has shown encouraging growth, driven by efforts to improve infrastructure, expand eco-tourism opportunities and attract more visitors to the state.
