A fraud couple from Durganagar in Khowai district allegedly duped over a dozen women of Rs 10 lakh through a fake microfinance investment scheme promising double returns. Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt as the accused remain absconding.

In a shocking case of financial fraud, at least a dozen women have lodged formal complaints against a couple accused of duping them of nearly Rs 10 lakh through a fraudulent microfinance investment scheme. The accused, identified as Biswajit Pal and his wife Sabita Rudra Pal, are residents of Durganagar in Khowai district and are currently absconding.

According to police sources, the couple allegedly posed as officials of a newly launched microfinance company and actively campaigned in villages across the district. They reportedly assured villagers—particularly economically weaker families and women—that any amount invested with their company would yield returns of one-and-a-half times to double the principal within a year.

Victims claimed the couple appeared convincing and professional, often promising to provide valid certificates and official documents immediately after deposits were made. However, many complainants said they never received any legitimate paperwork despite repeated requests. Instead, the accused allegedly avoided follow-ups and gradually became unreachable.

Police officials at Khowai Police Station confirmed that multiple written complaints have been received. “Several women have submitted a written complaint alleging financial fraud. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway,” a police officer stated. Authorities have launched efforts to trace the couple, who reportedly fled the area after facing mounting pressure from investors demanding repayment.

Many of the victims are said to have invested their life savings or borrowed money from relatives and self-help groups, lured by the promise of high and quick returns. The alleged scam has left several families in financial distress, particularly those from economically vulnerable backgrounds.

Local residents expressed concern over the growing trend of fraudulent investment schemes targeting rural communities. Police have urged citizens to verify the authenticity of financial institutions before investing and to report suspicious activities immediately.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies are examining whether more victims may come forward and whether the couple operated similar schemes in neighboring areas. Authorities have assured strict action once the accused are apprehended.
