West Tripura administration restricts petrol and diesel sale in containers amid panic buying linked to West Asia conflict. Mohanpur SDM issues immediate directive to prevent hoarding, ensure smooth supply, and maintain emergency stock across fuel retail outlets.

In a decisive administrative move, the Office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Mohanpur in West Tripura, has imposed an immediate restriction on the sale of petrol and diesel in containers at retail fuel outlets. The directive, issued on Tuesday, aims to curb panic buying and prevent hoarding following widespread rumors linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

The official memorandum, signed by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sajal Debnath, instructs all petroleum agencies operating under the Mohanpur subdivision to strictly regulate the sale of fuel in containers. Authorities clarified that the order does not indicate any shortage of fuel supply but is a precautionary measure to ensure equitable distribution and uninterrupted availability at petrol pumps.

According to administrative sources, reports of misinformation circulating on social media platforms triggered concerns among residents. Many consumers reportedly rushed to retail outlets to purchase fuel in bulk, fearing potential supply disruptions. This sudden surge in demand resulted in long queues of two-wheelers and four-wheelers outside petrol pumps across several areas in West Tripura.

Officials emphasized that there is no immediate threat to fuel supply in the district. The restriction is intended solely to discourage unnecessary stockpiling by individuals. Petroleum agencies have also been directed to maintain emergency stock levels as per prescribed government norms to safeguard against any unforeseen logistical challenges.

A copy of the memorandum has been forwarded to the Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department in Agartala for official record and necessary coordination. Authorities have reiterated that the supply chain remains stable and urged citizens not to panic or spread unverified information.

The administration has appealed to residents to cooperate with the temporary restriction and avoid engaging in hoarding practices. Officials warned that strict action may be taken against any outlet found violating the directive.

Despite assurances from the district administration, visible anxiety was evident as motorists lined up in large numbers at fuel stations. However, officials remain confident that the situation will normalize once clarity regarding fuel availability reaches the public.

The order has come into effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice from the district administration.
