Mass protests sweep India after reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US–Israel air strikes, triggering unrest in Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Hyderabad and Delhi, with heightened security and urgent calls for diplomatic restraint.
Widespread protests erupted across India on Sunday following reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in joint air strikes allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel. The development triggered an outpouring of grief and anger, particularly among Shia Muslim communities across several Indian states.
Thousands of demonstrators poured into the streets in multiple cities, carrying black flags and portraits of Khamenei, while chanting slogans condemning the reported attack. Protesters described the air strikes as an act of aggression and demanded accountability from the international community.
Massive Turnout in Kashmir
In Jammu and Kashmir, large-scale protests were reported in Srinagar and adjoining districts. Crowds assembled at prominent public spaces, including Lal Chowk, where thousands gathered despite tight security arrangements.
Protesters raised anti-US and anti-Israel slogans, waving black banners and placards expressing solidarity with Iran. Many described Khamenei as both a spiritual guide and a symbol of resistance in global politics.
Authorities responded by imposing restrictions on mobile internet services in certain districts. Schools and colleges were ordered to remain closed for two days as a precautionary measure. Police and paramilitary forces were deployed across sensitive areas to prevent any escalation.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealed for calm, urging citizens to maintain peace and ensure that demonstrations remained non-violent.
Protests Spread Across Uttar Pradesh
Significant demonstrations were also reported in Uttar Pradesh, particularly in Lucknow, where Shia groups organized mourning processions. Gatherings began at the historic Chota Imambara, with participants chanting slogans and calling for global diplomatic intervention.
Clerics announced a three-day mourning period, and protestors submitted memorandums to local authorities urging the Government of India to raise the matter on international platforms.
Other western Uttar Pradesh cities, including Agra, Aligarh, Amroha, Muzaffarnagar, and Saharanpur, witnessed similar marches. Demonstrators carried black banners and demanded diplomatic pressure to prevent further escalation in West Asia.
Demonstrations in Southern and National Capital Regions
Beyond northern India, protests and mourning processions were observed in Hyderabad, particularly in the Old City area, where participants recited traditional mourning chants and organized peaceful gatherings.
In Bengaluru, Shia-majority localities also held solidarity marches. Meanwhile, demonstrators assembled outside the Iran Cultural House in New Delhi, offering prayers and condemning the reported air strikes.
Community leaders across cities emphasized that the protests were largely peaceful and focused on expressing grief rather than inciting unrest. However, security agencies remained on high alert in several sensitive zones to prevent any communal tension.
Political Reactions and Diplomatic Questions
The unfolding situation has sparked political debate within India. Some opposition leaders criticized the central government’s initial silence on the reported strikes, urging New Delhi to clarify its diplomatic stance and advocate for de-escalation through international forums.
Global leaders have called for restraint amid fears of broader regional instability. The reported killing of Khamenei, if confirmed, represents a significant geopolitical shift with potential consequences for international relations and regional security dynamics.
As demonstrations continue in parts of India, authorities are balancing security concerns with citizens’ right to peaceful protest. Police have been seen accompanying processions to maintain order, and appeals for communal harmony have been issued by political and religious leaders alike.
