Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu stresses accountability of public representatives at Agartala workshop, highlighting democracy, women empowerment, agriculture schemes, and inclusive development. Leaders underline CPA’s role in strengthening parliamentary governance and bridging government vision with people’s aspirations.
Emphasising the crucial role of elected leaders in strengthening democracy, Indrasena Reddy Nallu said that public representatives serve as the vital bridge between the government’s vision and the aspirations of the people. He described them as the pillars of public trust and urged them to fulfil their foremost responsibility—serving citizens with dedication, accountability, and integrity.
The Governor made these remarks after inaugurating a seminar-cum-workshop titled “Responsibility and Accountability of Public Representatives to All Sections of People,” organised by the Tripura Legislative Assembly at Prajna Bhavan in Agartala.
Foundation of Effective Democracy
Addressing the gathering, the Governor stated that the theme of the workshop was not merely a matter for discussion but a foundation of effective democracy. He stressed that public representatives must ensure every citizen receives the rights and justice guaranteed under the Constitution.
He underlined the importance of inclusive development, highlighting that farmers, tribal communities, women, and youth must be empowered through transparent governance and targeted welfare schemes. According to him, public representatives, although elected from specific constituencies, carry the broader responsibility of serving the entire state and safeguarding the interests of all sections of society.
“Ensuring that the benefits of development reach the last person in society is among the most important duties of any public representative,” he said, calling for a people-centric approach in governance.
Education, Women Empowerment and Entrepreneurship
Expressing pride over Tripura’s achievement of being declared a fully literate state, the Governor emphasised the need to build a strong ecosystem that ensures quality education. He said literacy must translate into skill development, employment opportunities, and overall social progress.
Highlighting strides in women empowerment, he pointed to the success of initiatives such as the Lakhpati Didi scheme, under which more than one lakh women in the state have reportedly become financially independent entrepreneurs. He noted that economic empowerment of women strengthens families and communities, thereby reinforcing democratic values at the grassroots level.
Focus on Agriculture and Welfare Schemes
The Governor also brought attention to the agricultural backbone of the state, noting that nearly 70 percent of Tripura’s population depends on farming. He urged public representatives to ensure that farmers benefit fully from central schemes such as PM-Kisan and Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
He said effective implementation of such schemes would not only secure farmers’ livelihoods but also promote rural development and economic stability across the state.
Strengthening Parliamentary Democracy
Speaking at the programme, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh highlighted the role of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), established in 1911, in strengthening parliamentary democracy, good governance, and the rule of law worldwide.

He said the CPA aims to enhance the capacity of public representatives through regional cooperation and transparent governance practices. According to him, initiatives such as the present workshop are highly relevant in promoting accountability and improving the quality of life of citizens.
Harivansh also praised Tripura’s rich and composite culture, shaped by the harmonious coexistence of 19 tribal communities. He said that with its natural resources, traditional heritage, and focused development efforts, Tripura has emerged as a notable example of progress.
Northeast Development Gains Momentum
The Deputy Chairman further stated that since 2014, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, development in the Northeast has gained remarkable momentum. He referred to flagship initiatives such as the Act East Policy and the projection of the eight northeastern states as ‘Ashtalakshmi’ as transformative measures that have enhanced connectivity, investment, and regional growth.
He also highlighted the historical legacy of Tripura’s Manikya dynasty and urged public representatives to work collectively for the state’s progress while standing firmly beside people from all sections of society.
Accountability Key to Public Trust
Addressing the event virtually, West Tripura Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb stressed that accountability and responsibility are indispensable for strengthening democracy. He said public representatives must continuously earn the trust of the people through transparent functioning and responsive governance.
Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, MPs Kriti Devi Singh Debbarma and Parimal Suklabaidya, Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy, and MLA Gopal Chandra Roy also addressed the gathering.
A message from Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury was read out by MLA Sudip Sarkar. The vote of thanks was delivered by Acting Speaker Ramprasad Paul.
Among others present were Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Agartala Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, and Assembly Secretary Amiya Kumar Nath. Cabinet ministers, Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipatis, members of the TTAADC, municipal corporators, and grassroots representatives also attended the workshop.
