Tripura Puppet Theatre debuts at Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2025, presenting a puppet adaptation of Tagore’s Bisarjan in New Delhi, marking a historic moment for Tripura’s cultural heritage on a global theatre platform.
Tripura’s rich and often understated cultural tradition will take centre stage in the national capital as Tripura Puppet Theatre makes its debut at the prestigious Bharat Rang Mahotsav, organised by the National School of Drama (NSD). At the 25th edition of one of the world’s largest theatre festivals, the Tripura-based troupe will present a puppet adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s iconic play Bisarjan on February 13 at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi.
The participation marks a significant milestone not just for the theatre group but for the cultural landscape of Tripura. For the first time, a puppet theatre ensemble from the state will perform at the internationally recognised festival, bringing Tripura’s artistic voice to a global platform.
The puppet production of Bisarjan has already carried Tripura’s cultural identity beyond the state’s borders, with successful performances across India and abroad. Blending traditional puppetry with contemporary theatrical expression, the production has earned wide appreciation for its craftsmanship and storytelling, while consistently representing Tripura’s contribution to Indian performing arts.
An eight-member team from Tripura, led by director Prabhitangsu Das, will depart for New Delhi on February 12. The troupe includes lighting designer Pradip Das and puppet artistes Liton Saha, Rimon Das, Liton Das, Puranjan Deb, Dipankar Bhattacharjee and Khokon Miya—each playing a role in taking the state’s creative heritage to a national audience.
