Tripura Power Department to deploy drone technology from March and introduce live line maintenance to modernise electricity infrastructure, reduce outages, enhance safety, and ensure uninterrupted power supply, says Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath.

The Tripura Power Department is set to take a major technological leap by introducing live line maintenance and deploying drone technology to monitor power transmission and distribution infrastructure, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Monday. The initiative is part of the state government’s broader vision to modernise the power sector and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across Tripura.

Addressing the third foundation day programme of Tripura Power Transmission Limited (TPTL) at Urja Bhawan in Agartala, the Power Minister emphasised that a robust and technologically advanced power infrastructure is crucial for the overall development of the state. He said strengthening the electricity sector remains a key priority in achieving the government’s goal of building a developed and self-reliant Tripura.

According to the minister, live line maintenance technology, which enables repair and maintenance of power lines without shutting down electricity supply, will be introduced from February. Drone-based surveillance and monitoring of power transmission lines and related infrastructure will begin from March. These advanced systems are expected to significantly improve operational efficiency, enhance safety standards, and reduce power outages.

“Uninterrupted electricity is the backbone of development. Without power, no sector can function effectively. To build a modern Tripura, the power sector must be further strengthened with innovation and advanced technology,” Nath said.

Live line maintenance is considered a game-changing solution in power management, as it allows engineers and technicians to carry out critical repair work without disrupting supply to consumers. This is particularly important for hospitals, industries, educational institutions, and essential services that depend on continuous electricity.

The deployment of drones will further strengthen the monitoring system by enabling real-time inspection of transmission lines, towers, and substations, especially in remote and difficult terrains. Drone surveillance will help detect faults, structural damage, vegetation encroachment, and potential risks at an early stage, allowing preventive action before major disruptions occur.

“These initiatives are aimed at improving efficiency, reducing technical losses, minimising outages, and ensuring the safety of our workforce,” the minister added.

During the event, Nath also launched the annual calendar of Tripura Power Transmission Limited. He described the calendar as an important planning and monitoring tool that outlines targets, timelines, and upcoming initiatives of the utility. He suggested that the calendar-based review system could serve as a model for other government departments to regularly assess project implementation and performance.

Highlighting ongoing infrastructure upgrades, the Power Minister said that work on laying underground power cables is currently underway in key urban areas, including Agartala, Dharmanagar, and Khumulwng. Underground cabling is expected to improve power reliability, enhance urban aesthetics, and significantly reduce disruptions caused by storms, falling trees, and weather-related damage to overhead lines.

He also said that the power department is increasingly focusing on adopting innovative and environment-friendly technologies, in line with national objectives on sustainability and energy efficiency. The state government aims to balance development needs with environmental responsibility while ensuring affordable and reliable electricity for all.

Beyond its core technical responsibilities, TPTL is also actively engaged in social welfare initiatives under its corporate social responsibility framework. Nath noted that the utility regularly organises blood donation camps, health check-up camps, and distributes energy-efficient LED bulbs to promote public welfare and energy conservation awareness.

As part of the third foundation day celebrations, TPTL organised cultural programmes and community-oriented activities. A voluntary blood donation camp was held under the supervision of a private hospital, drawing participation from employees and local residents. Free LED bulbs were distributed to families in nearby areas to encourage energy-efficient electricity usage and reduce household power consumption.

The Power Minister appreciated the role of TPTL in strengthening Tripura’s power transmission network over the past three years and expressed confidence that the adoption of advanced technologies such as live line maintenance and drones would further enhance the reliability and resilience of the state’s electricity infrastructure.
