Former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb will inaugurate the 139th Paush Sankranti Mela in Dharmanagar on January 14, featuring cultural programs, agricultural exhibitions, government stalls, flower displays, and traditional celebrations over four days.
Former Tripura Chief Minister and sitting Member of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb will inaugurate the 139th Paush Sankranti Mela and Uttarayan Utsav at the historic Pratyek Ray Bara Akhara in Dharmanagar on January 14. The announcement was made by Dharmanagar MLA Yadav Lal Debnath during a press conference held on Sunday evening.
The four-day traditional fair, one of the oldest cultural events in North Tripura, is witnessing extensive preparations, with local authorities and community members working together to ensure a grand and smooth celebration. MLA Debnath stated that all logistical and administrative arrangements are nearing completion, and the event is expected to draw thousands of visitors from across the district and neighboring areas.
The annual Paush Sankranti Mela is known for blending cultural heritage with rural economic activity. This year, the fair will feature a wide range of stalls offering household items, traditional food products, sweets, handicrafts, and children’s toys. In addition, several government departments will set up exhibition stalls to showcase welfare schemes, public services, and development initiatives aimed at rural upliftment.
A major highlight of the fair will be the agricultural exhibition and competitive display of locally grown vegetables. Farmers will showcase crops such as gourd, pumpkin, brinjal, cabbage, chilli, and peas. The competition aims to encourage modern farming practices and recognize excellence in agricultural productivity, with prizes awarded to top performers.
Adding to the attractions, a flower garden exhibition has been introduced for the first time this year. The initiative is expected to promote horticulture, beautification, and eco-friendly practices while offering visitors a visually appealing experience.
Cultural programmes will remain a key attraction throughout the fair. Artists and performers from different parts of Tripura will present folk dances, traditional music, and cultural performances daily at the open stage. The cultural evenings are expected to reflect the rich heritage, unity, and artistic diversity of the state.
