A high-capacity Doppler Weather Radar will be installed in South Tripura to strengthen weather monitoring, early warnings, and disaster preparedness, improving forecasting of rainfall, storms, lightning, and cyclones across the region.

A high-capacity Doppler Weather Radar is set to be installed in South Tripura under the initiative of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The advanced radar system aims to enhance real-time weather monitoring, improve early warning mechanisms, and minimize the impact of extreme weather events across the region.

The Doppler Weather Radar will be installed on the premises of the under-construction District Magistrate’s Office at Sarasima, located in the Belonia sub-division of South Tripura district. According to officials, the radar installation will cover an area of approximately 0.22 acres and will have an operational range of up to 100 kilometres, enabling extensive surveillance of weather patterns across South Tripura and adjoining districts.

Addressing a press conference held at the South Tripura District Magistrate’s Office conference hall on Tuesday, District Magistrate Mohammad Sajjad P highlighted the importance of the project. He stated that the Doppler Weather Radar would play a crucial role in providing advance alerts related to rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, storms, and cyclonic activities. Such timely information is expected to significantly strengthen disaster management efforts and emergency response systems.

The District Magistrate emphasized that the radar system would greatly enhance the district administration’s capacity to issue accurate and timely weather warnings. This, in turn, will help reduce risks to life, property, agriculture, and critical infrastructure, particularly during extreme and unpredictable weather conditions.

Scientist Partha Roy from the Agartala unit of the India Meteorological Department was also present at the press conference. He explained that Doppler Weather Radar technology allows meteorologists to monitor atmospheric changes in real time, track storm movement, estimate rainfall intensity, and predict severe weather events with greater precision.

Officials believe that the installation of the radar will be a game-changer for South Tripura, a region often vulnerable to heavy rainfall, cyclones, and lightning strikes. The system will also support better planning for agriculture, transportation, and disaster mitigation by providing reliable weather data.

The project is being viewed as a major boost to the weather forecasting infrastructure in Tripura, aligning with the central government’s broader objective of strengthening climate resilience and disaster preparedness across vulnerable regions. Once operational, the Doppler Weather Radar is expected to benefit not only South Tripura but also neighboring districts by offering faster and more accurate weather intelligence.
