Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans a three-day Swadeshi Fair in January 2026 to promote locally manufactured products of Tripura, support self-reliant initiatives, empower SHGs, and commemorate the historic Swadeshi Movement with cultural events.

Agartala is set to witness a major push for local entrepreneurship and indigenous manufacturing as the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to organise a three-day Swadeshi Fair aimed at promoting locally produced goods of Tripura. The announcement was made on Monday by AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder following a high-level preparatory meeting held at the AMC conference hall.

According to the Mayor, the proposed Swadeshi Fair is tentatively scheduled to take place from January 9 to January 11, 2026, at the iconic Swami Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala, subject to approval from the state government. The fair is envisioned as a platform to showcase locally manufactured products, self-reliant initiatives, and indigenous craftsmanship from across Tripura.

Mayor Majumder stated that a formal proposal will soon be submitted to the state government for clearance. If approved, the fair will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, with the presence of cabinet ministers, Members of the Legislative Assembly, chairpersons of Public Sector Enterprises, district officials, and other elected representatives.

Officials from multiple state departments, including the District Magistrate of West Tripura, participated in the preparatory meeting, highlighting the government’s collective commitment to strengthening the local economy.

Highlighting the broader vision behind the initiative, the Mayor said the fair aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Atma Nirbhar Bharat mission as well as the state’s focus on Atma Nirbhar Tripura. The event aims to demonstrate how local innovation and community-driven production can contribute to sustainable economic growth.

A significant feature of the Swadeshi Fair will be the participation of Self-Help Group (SHG) members, who will display and sell their products. Additionally, various state government departments have been invited to set up stalls to present their development initiatives and locally produced goods.

Cultural programmes will be an integral part of the fair, with evening performances scheduled throughout the three-day event. These cultural activities are expected to attract large crowds and enhance public engagement with the Swadeshi theme.

Organisers estimate that around 60 to 65 stalls will be set up at the venue, offering a wide range of products including handicrafts, handloom items, processed foods, and other indigenous goods.

The fair will also commemorate the historic Swadeshi Movement of 1905, with special displays showcasing its significance and legacy. These exhibitions aim to inspire citizens to embrace local production and reduce dependence on external markets.

The proposed Swadeshi Fair is expected to boost local businesses, empower grassroots entrepreneurs, and reinforce the spirit of self-reliance in Tripura.
