A passenger bus overturned on the Amarpur–Nutanbazar road near a TSR camp, injuring at least 20 people. Overloading, high speed, and possible mechanical failure are suspected causes as authorities launch an investigation.
At least 20 passengers, including several children, were injured after a passenger bus overturned on the Amarpur–Nutanbazar road near the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) 5th Battalion camp on Monday, triggering panic and chaos at the accident site.
According to preliminary reports, the bus was travelling at a high speed when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn near the TSR camp area. The sudden accident left passengers trapped inside the damaged bus, prompting immediate rescue efforts by local residents and security personnel stationed nearby.
Eyewitnesses said the bus was heavily overcrowded at the time of the incident. Many passengers were standing, while others were seated in unsafe positions, increasing the risk of injury when the vehicle overturned. Local people rushed to the spot and helped pull injured passengers out of the bus before ambulances arrived.
All the injured passengers were initially rushed to Amarpur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors provided emergency medical treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed that most of the injured sustained fractures, head injuries, and multiple bruises. One unidentified passenger, who was in critical condition, was later referred to the district hospital for advanced medical care.
An injured passenger speaking to the media claimed that excessive overloading was the primary reason behind the accident. The passenger alleged that repeated warnings to the driver about speeding and overcrowding were ignored. “The bus was packed far beyond its capacity, and the driver was driving recklessly,” the injured passenger said.
Preliminary mechanical inspection reports also suggest that the bus involved in the accident was very old. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of a steering failure, which may have caused the vehicle to suddenly lose balance while in motion. A detailed technical inspection has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Police officials confirmed that an investigation has been initiated to assess whether the bus operator violated traffic and safety regulations. Authorities are also examining whether the vehicle had valid fitness and permit documents.

Despite the severity of the accident, officials stated that the situation could have been far worse. There was a strong possibility of major fatalities, but many passengers narrowly escaped with their lives. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about passenger safety, overloading, and the operation of outdated vehicles on busy regional roads.
Local administration officials have assured strict action against those found responsible and emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of road safety norms to prevent similar accidents in the future.
