The High-Level Task Force reviewed and accelerated infrastructure projects in Northeast India to strengthen inter-state connectivity, promote sustainable growth, and position the region as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia under the visionary Act East Policy.

The High-Level Task Force on Infrastructure and Connectivity convened a virtual meeting on Monday to assess and expedite ongoing infrastructure projects. The meeting, attended by key political and administrative leaders from all eight Northeastern states—including Sikkim—aimed to reinforce inter-state connectivity and pave the way for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

The Northeastern region, known for its strategic location as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia, stands to benefit immensely from this coordinated effort. The virtual conference was chaired by Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who is also the convener of the task force, and featured participation from Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, along with Chief Ministers and senior officials from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim.

Aligning with the Vision of Act East Policy

Union Minister Scindia underscored the importance of the meeting, stating that the strategic roadmap aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Act East, Act Fast and Act First.” This policy aims to transform the Northeastern states, often referred to as the “Ashtalakshmi” states, into a robust economic corridor that serves as a vital link to Southeast Asia. The minister highlighted that the task force reviewed plans to enhance multimodal and digital connectivity, which are crucial for unlocking new growth opportunities in the region.

“Our objective is to integrate the region’s infrastructure with modern logistics solutions to stimulate trade, tourism, and investment, thus catalyzing overall development,” said Minister Scindia in a statement posted on his social media.

Focus on Multimodal Connectivity and Infrastructure Acceleration

The task force meeting focused on accelerating various ongoing infrastructure projects, including roadways, railways, and digital connectivity initiatives. Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized the need for a cohesive approach to strengthen inter-state transport links and promote balanced regional development.

“The meeting reviewed the progress of key projects and identified bottlenecks that must be addressed urgently to maintain momentum,” Saha said. “Infrastructure development in the Northeast is critical not only for economic growth but also for ensuring sustainable livelihoods and inclusive prosperity for our people.”

Mizoram’s Strategic Connectivity Proposals

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, speaking at the meeting, pointed out the state’s strategic geographic advantage for connectivity with Southeast Asian countries. He stressed the importance of completing the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project in neighboring Myanmar at the earliest.

CM Lalduhoma highlighted recent railway developments, noting that rail connectivity has reached Sairang near Aizawl and advocated extending the rail line further into southern Mizoram to enhance regional access. He also called for upgrading the National Highway to Zorinpui, which would facilitate better movement between eastern and western Mizoram and improve access to border areas.

Emphasizing the importance of durable infrastructure, Lalduhoma recommended that roads be constructed with concrete to withstand the region’s heavy monsoon rains. Additionally, he proposed the development of Sairang and Lawngtlai as multimodal transport hubs to streamline logistics and reduce costs.

Preparing the Final Report and Next Steps

Officials revealed that the High-Level Task Force is in the final stages of preparing its comprehensive report. This report will include actionable recommendations for short, medium, and long-term interventions focused on integrated infrastructure development across the Northeastern states.

The task forces were initially constituted after the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) held last November in Agartala, presided over by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. These groups are charged with drafting strategies to harness the full potential of the North East Economic Corridor.

A Collaborative Vision for Northeast India

The ongoing efforts represent a collaborative vision among the central and state governments to transform the Northeastern region into an economic powerhouse. The focus on improving connectivity, reducing logistics costs, and ensuring climate-resilient infrastructure aims to boost investment, create jobs, and strengthen ties with Southeast Asia.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha summarized the outcome of the meeting: “This task force is dedicated to reviewing ongoing projects, strengthening inter-state connectivity, and accelerating infrastructure development to promote sustainable and inclusive growth across the Northeast.”

As the Northeastern states prepare to implement the recommendations, the region is poised for a new chapter of development, driven by enhanced infrastructure and strategic planning.
