Suspected TUNF militant Karna Joy Reang arrested in North Tripura during a joint police operation. Authorities recover key intelligence as court grants three-day remand for further investigation into militant activities.
Security forces in Tripura have achieved a significant breakthrough in their ongoing efforts to curb militant activities with the arrest of a suspected member of the Tripura United National Front (TUNF) in North Tripura district. The arrest was made following a coordinated operation based on specific intelligence inputs received from confidential sources, police officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The joint operation was carried out by personnel of the North Tripura Police in close coordination with the Officer-in-Charge of Vanghmun Police Station. Acting on the tip-off, security teams launched a targeted search operation in the remote Damcherra Kargil Tila area, which eventually led to the apprehension of the suspected militant.
The arrested individual has been identified as Karna Joy Reang, aged 45, a resident of Damdoi village in the neighboring state of Mizoram. According to preliminary investigations, Reang had joined the outlawed TUNF organization approximately eight months ago and was operating with the rank of “Major”, indicating a senior position within the militant hierarchy.
Police sources revealed that the TUNF group to which Reang belonged is believed to consist of nearly 30 active members. Intelligence reports further suggest that the families of these militants have been deliberately kept in separate villages across Assam, a tactic reportedly adopted to avoid detection and reduce vulnerability during counter-insurgency operations.
It has also emerged during questioning that members of the group were frequently moving across multiple locations in Mizoram, allegedly to evade law enforcement agencies and maintain operational secrecy. Investigators believe that such cross-border movement was aimed at strengthening the group’s logistical network and recruitment efforts.
Following the arrest, a formal case was registered at Bhangmun Police Station under relevant sections of law. In view of security concerns and to prevent any possible rescue attempts or threats, the accused was later transferred to Kanchanpur Police Station for safe custody and further interrogation.
Police officials stated that Karna Joy Reang was produced before a competent court on Thursday. After hearing the prosecution’s request, the court granted three days of police remand, allowing investigators to question the accused in greater detail to gather more information about the group’s activities, leadership structure, funding sources, and possible links to other militant networks.
