NERPC assures full support to TSECL for strengthening Tripura’s power system, enhancing grid stability, transmission infrastructure, cybersecurity, and energy management. Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb raises demand in Parliament for 100% central funding of tribal student scholarships.

The North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC) has assured full cooperation to the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) in strengthening and modernising Tripura’s power system, following a high-level meeting held at the TSECL corporate office in Agartala on Thursday. The meeting brought together senior leadership from both organisations, reaffirming their commitment to improving the state’s electricity infrastructure and ensuring more reliable power services for consumers.

The delegation from NERPC was led by Member-Secretary K. B. Jagtap, accompanied by Sajan George, head of the North Eastern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NERLDC). On the TSECL side, Managing Director Biswajit Basu, Technical Director Dr. Subir Sen, and other senior officials participated in an extensive review session covering Tripura’s evolving power requirements and ongoing challenges.

Focus on Grid Stability and Transmission Strengthening

The meeting delved into a wide spectrum of issues including grid stability, transmission infrastructure upgrades, cybersecurity preparedness, commercial mechanisms, and advanced energy management systems. A key topic of discussion was the reconductoring work being carried out under Tripura Power Transmission Limited. Officials underscored the urgency of completing the project, which is considered vital for enhancing transmission efficiency, reducing technical losses, and minimising system vulnerabilities.

NERPC representatives assured that the committee would extend unconditional technical support to TSECL. They emphasised that coordinated planning, timely maintenance, and systematic upgradation of infrastructure are essential for delivering customer-friendly and interruption-free power services.

Role of NERPC in Regional Power Management

Established under the Electricity Act, 2003, Regional Power Committees are tasked with ensuring seamless coordination in grid operations, interstate power exchange, and system stability. Each RPC is headed by a Member-Secretary nominated by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). These committees conduct technical studies, prepare maintenance schedules, plan transmission expansion, regulate voltage, and improve operational efficiency across states.

Among the major responsibilities of NERPC are:

  • Facilitating interstate power transfer

  • Conducting operational and protection studies

  • Managing annual and monthly maintenance planning

  • Overseeing power scheduling and energy accounting

  • Assessing transmission charges and operational decisions affecting all northeastern states

Officials at the meeting highlighted that implementation of RPC guidelines and proactive cooperation between state agencies and central bodies are crucial for strengthening the region’s overall power ecosystem.

Commitment to Future Upgrades

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides expressed confidence that continued collaboration, particularly in technology adoption, automation of systems, and preventive maintenance, would significantly enhance the reliability of Tripura’s power grid. They agreed to maintain close coordination in future planning, ensuring that consumers benefit from more stable, efficient, and secure electricity services.

MP Biplab Kumar Deb Raises Scholarship Demand in Parliament

In a separate development, Tripura’s Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb highlighted the financial constraints faced by northeastern states and raised a key demand in Parliament concerning education benefits for tribal students. He urged the Union Government to provide 100% central funding for both pre-matric and post-matric scholarships for tribal students in the region, citing low revenue generation across northeastern states.

Deb also sought clarification on whether the government plans to revise and increase scholarship amounts, considering that no upward revision has been made in the five years since the 2019–20 financial year. He appealed to the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs to examine the matter and ensure enhanced financial support for students belonging to tribal communities.

The appeal has gained attention as tribal students form a substantial part of the northeastern states’ population, and scholarships play a crucial role in supporting their education and career opportunities.

Strengthening Governance and Infrastructure in Tripura

The developments—both in the power sector and the education sector—reflect the growing focus on improving public services and infrastructure in Tripura. With NERPC’s assurance of cooperation and rising national attention to tribal welfare, Tripura is expected to witness more coordinated reforms in the months ahead.
