Tripura CM Manik Saha reviews TIDC and TTDC to boost industrial growth, tea production, investment, and job creation. Emphasising PM Modi’s “vocal for local,” he highlights stronger marketing, improved tea quality, and enhanced welfare measures for tea workers.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday held two high-level review meetings at the State Secretariat, focusing on the expansion of industrial development and strengthening the state’s tea sector.

The back-to-back meetings with the Tripura Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. (TIDC) and Tripura Tea Development Corporation Ltd. (TTDC) highlighted the government’s renewed push toward investment, employment generation, and support for local industries under the larger vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘vocal for local’ initiative.

During his meeting with TIDC officials earlier in the day, the Chief Minister emphasised the importance of transforming Tripura into a hub of innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic growth. He underscored the need for a targeted approach to industrial development—one that ensures long-term job creation, improved infrastructure, and a business-friendly environment to attract investors from across the country.

“We are committed to making Tripura a hub of innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable growth,” CM Saha stated after the meeting, noting that the state must actively work to increase industrial output and encourage private sector participation. Strategies discussed included the development of industrial parks, easier access to land for industries, better logistics support, and proactive measures to promote investment from outside the region.

Second High-Level Meeting Focuses on Tea Sector Expansion

Later in the day, the Chief Minister chaired a detailed review meeting with the Tripura Tea Development Corporation Ltd. (TTDC), where he directed officials to adopt strong and realistic plans to make the Corporation financially profitable. He also stressed improving living conditions for tea workers, strengthening marketing strategies, and promoting the unique quality of Tripura tea.

Calling the tea sector one of the pillars of the state’s agro-based economy, CM Saha said the government will continue to support tea growers and expand market opportunities.
“Our government remains committed to supporting the tea industry, which plays a vital role in Tripura’s economy,” he said.

He reiterated the importance of reinforcing Prime Minister Modi’s ‘vocal for local’ message by ensuring that Tripura’s tea products gain greater visibility and higher consumption within the state itself. The CM noted that Tripura tea, known for its natural flavour and aroma, is not inferior to tea produced in any major tea-growing region of the country.

Promoting Tripura Tea Across Non-Producing States

During the review, CM Saha directed TTDC to strengthen its marketing campaigns and expand promotional activities. He encouraged officials to target states where tea is not produced and where Tripura’s products could find strong consumer interest.
He said that proper branding, packaging, and outreach can significantly elevate Tripura tea in national markets, ultimately bringing in higher profits.

Progress Report on Production and Welfare Measures

Industries and Commerce Department Secretary Kiran Gitte presented key statistics, informing the Chief Minister that the state produced 90 lakh kg of tea in 2024, demonstrating the industry’s resilience and productivity. Tripura currently has:

  • 5 TTDC-run tea gardens

  • 13 cooperative-run gardens

  • 36 privately owned tea estates

  • 2,800 small tea growers contributing to total output

Gitte reported that several welfare initiatives have been implemented under the Chief Minister’s Tea Workers Welfare Scheme. The daily wage for tea workers has been doubled from Rs 105 to Rs 204, marking a significant improvement in their earnings.

Additionally, major infrastructure upgrades have been undertaken:

  • Brahmakund Tea Processing Centre in West Tripura has been fully modernised.

  • A new small tea processing factory has been set up at Machmara Tea Estate to support small growers.

The Chief Minister praised these measures but also urged the Corporation to expand its outreach, improve product consistency, ensure better financial planning, and accelerate reforms to make TTDC self-sustaining.

Senior Officials Attend High-Level Review

The meeting was attended by Minister of Industries and Commerce Santana Chakma, TTDC Chairman Sameer Ranjan Ghosh, Chief Secretary J. K. Sinha, Secretary to the Chief Minister Pradeep Kumar Chakraborty, Finance Secretary Apurba Roy, and TTDC Managing Director Subrata Kumar Das, among others.
