Tripura CM Dr. Manik Saha visited Shantirbazar Market after the October 23 violence, met affected traders, and announced major relief measures including compensation for damaged shops and homes while assuring strict action against culprits and promoting unity among all communities.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday visited Shantirbazar Market in Dhalai district to take stock of the situation following the violence that took place during the statewide bandh on October 23. The Chief Minister met traders, residents, and local officials to assess the extent of damage and review steps taken to restore normalcy in the region.

Dr. Saha emphasized that the people of Tripura, irrespective of community, desire peace and harmony. He reiterated that both Jaati and Janajati communities are determined to remain united and reject any attempt to create unrest in the state.

During his interaction with the media, the Chief Minister described the October 23 incident as “unfortunate and pre-planned.” He said, “I have come here with several leaders and officials. On October 23, when the Tripura Civil Society called for a strike, a disturbing incident occurred at Shantirbazar in Dhalai district. It was a conspiracy. Similar incidents had occurred earlier in Gandatwisa and other areas. Common people never want such things.”

Dr. Saha added that the administration monitored the situation closely from the moment the violence erupted. “When the incident occurred, I kept track of every development throughout the night. Police officials were sent to the spot immediately. Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was imposed on October 23 and withdrawn on October 31. In Tripura, both Jaati and Janajati communities must stay united. We must always remain cautious. The government will not spare anyone involved in such incidents, whoever they may be.”

According to the Chief Minister, at least seven persons have been arrested so far in connection with the violence. He assured that the law would take its own course without any interference.

“Law will take its own course of action. I have met those who were injured at the hospital. All necessary assistance has been provided through the government helpline. Many people have requested the setting up of police stations and outposts. I will discuss this with the Director General of Police and other officials.”

The Chief Minister further informed that a delegation of ministers had already visited the area and submitted their report. He described the incident as extremely unfortunate, pointing out that several shops had been vandalized and multiple individuals attacked.

“Many shops were vandalized, and some people were assaulted. I have spoken with the District Magistrate and the Chief Secretary regarding immediate help for the victims. We have taken several decisions to support those who suffered losses. People do not want unrest. I strongly believe such incidents will not be repeated.”

Dr. Saha directed the District Magistrate to ensure swift rehabilitation of affected families and traders. He underscored the importance of restoring confidence among the local population and strengthening security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Relief Package Announced

As part of the government’s rehabilitation efforts, the Chief Minister announced a structured relief package for affected residents and traders. The government will provide:

  • ₹3 lakh for fully damaged houses or shops

  • ₹1.5 lakh for severely damaged structures

  • ₹15,000 for partially damaged properties

In addition, the Chief Minister stated that injured individuals will receive necessary financial and medical support from the state government.

Dr. Saha reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring justice. He urged all communities to remain united and vigilant against those attempting to disturb Tripura’s social harmony.
