Tripura’s Gomati District Hospital achieves a milestone with 12 successful surgeries in one day, including a complex cancer operation. The state’s healthcare reforms and PM-JAY, CM-JAY schemes ensure free, quality medical treatment and boost public trust in government hospitals.

the Gomati District Hospital in Tripura has achieved a significant milestone by conducting 12 successful surgeries in a single day, including a complex breast cancer operation. This achievement stands as a shining example of the state government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare services across district hospitals.

According to hospital authorities, the operations were performed on Monday by a skilled medical team led by Surgeon Dr. Biswajit Pal, who described the day as “highly busy yet deeply rewarding.” Of the total procedures, six were major and six minor surgeries, all completed successfully.

Among the 12 operations, a notable one involved a breast cancer surgery on a woman from Amarpur, highlighting the hospital’s expanding capacity to handle critical and specialized cases. Dr. Pal was assisted by Dr. Amaresh Bhowmik and Dr. Moutusi Chowdhury, who played key roles in ensuring smooth and successful outcomes throughout the day.

“All patients are now stable and recovering well under post-operative care,” confirmed hospital sources, emphasizing that the success rate reflects the growing capabilities of the district’s public health infrastructure.

Rising Performance Under Government Healthcare Initiatives

Over the past month, Gomati District Hospital has performed more than 200 surgeries, marking a substantial increase in operational efficiency. In just the last week, the hospital recorded 52 successful operations across multiple departments including gynaecology, general surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, and orthopedics.

This exceptional performance has been made possible under the state government’s focused initiative to strengthen district hospitals and make advanced medical care more accessible to rural populations.

Crucially, all surgeries were conducted free of cost under two flagship healthcare schemes — the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) and the Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana (CM-JAY). These programs aim to ensure that every citizen, regardless of financial background, can avail of quality medical treatment without financial burden.

Infrastructure and Quality Improvements Underway

Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Kajal Kumar Das stated that efforts are ongoing to bring the Gomati District Hospital under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) framework. As part of this initiative, the infrastructure of all wards has been upgraded, with a strong emphasis on cleanliness, patient comfort, and safety.

“The hospital’s infrastructure is continuously being modernized to meet national quality benchmarks,” Dr. Das said. “We’ve already shifted the Mother and Child Department to a new building equipped with better facilities to serve patients more effectively.”

The administration’s proactive measures and systematic approach have resulted in visible improvements — from smoother patient management to cleaner wards and better-equipped operation theatres.

Public Confidence in Government Healthcare Growing

The consistent success of Gomati District Hospital has drawn widespread appreciation from both the administration and the public. Residents have lauded the hospital’s growing reputation for providing reliable, free, and high-quality healthcare services.

Observers note that such performance from a district hospital symbolizes a broader shift — restoring public confidence in government healthcare institutions, which have long been overshadowed by private facilities. The success story from Gomati is now being cited as a model for other district hospitals in the state to emulate.

Health officials believe that if similar momentum continues, Tripura’s healthcare network could emerge as one of the most efficient and accessible in the northeastern region.

A Symbol of Progress in Public Health

The 12 successful surgeries in a single day stand as more than just a numerical milestone — they represent a triumph of coordination, skill, and commitment. From surgeons and nurses to support staff and administrative officials, every member of the Gomati District Hospital team contributed to this achievement.

Their success also underscores the effectiveness of the state and central government’s health policies, ensuring that advanced medical services reach people at the grassroots level.
