The military attacked on Monday evening in Chaung U township in central Myanmar in the Sagaing region, where about 100 people had gathered in a field after sunset to observe a Buddhist festival of lights with a candlelit event.
 
 
Since 2021, thousands have died and millions have been displaced, when the army seized power, triggering a civil war with armed resistance groups and ethnic militias. Myanmar is scheduled to hold general elections in December, the first vote since the 2021 coup.
