The mysterious death of a woman in Mirza, under Kakraban Assembly constituency in Gomati district, has triggered political uproar and strong reactions from across party lines. The incident, which surfaced on Friday morning when the charred body of Anjali Sarkar was discovered, has now led to arrests, police suspensions, and heightened political activity in the region.
Arrests and Police Action
After allegations and counter-allegations surfaced from different quarters, the Gomati district police moved swiftly on Saturday evening, arresting four individuals in connection with the case. Among those arrested was Anupam Majumder alias Manna, who is notably the nephew of a sitting MLA. Others detained included Kinkar Das, Litan Das, and Diptanu Das.
Gomati Superintendent of Police, Dr. Kiran Kumar, confirmed the arrests and assured that investigations are continuing in multiple directions. He maintained that all leads, including the woman’s previous complaints of threats, are being carefully examined to ensure justice is served.
Negligence by Police and ASI Suspension
One of the most significant developments in the case has been the suspension of ASI Sanjoy Sarkar of Kakraban Police Station. According to official sources, Anjali Sarkar and her husband Pankaj Sarkar had approached the police on the night of September 18, just days before her death. They had filed a complaint that Manna, along with two associates, had threatened them in their shop at Mirza market following a previous enmity.
The Officer-in-Charge of Kakraban PS had directed ASI Sarkar to verify the complaint and take immediate action. However, the ASI allegedly failed to carry out his duties, taking no steps to address the matter. His suspension reflects what many see as a lapse that may have contributed to the tragic outcome.
Political Leaders Step In
The case has taken a sharp political turn, with leaders from BJP, Congress, and CPI(M) visiting the residence of the deceased to express solidarity with the bereaved family. Minister Pranajit Singha Roy and MLA Abhishek Debroy were among the first from the ruling party to reach out to the grieving family.
On the opposition front, senior Congress leaders including MLA Birajit Sinha and Congress Working Committee member MLA Sudip Roy Barman also visited Mirza. They met Anjali Sarkar’s family and assured them of their support. Later, the Congress delegation met the DGP at the office of the Gomati District SP, demanding strict action and immediate arrests of all culprits involved.
Allegations by the Victim’s Family
Adding further weight to the case, Pankaj Sarkar, husband of the deceased, directly accused several individuals of involvement in the crime. He named Manna, Kinkar Das, Litan Das, Diptanu Das, and Akash Sarkar as being complicit in his wife’s killing.
His statement has increased pressure on the investigating team to broaden the scope of the probe, as political leaders and civil society demand accountability not just from the accused but also from law enforcement agencies that failed to act in time.
Political Fallout and Public Outrage
The incident has sparked outrage among the public and raised concerns about the law and order situation in Gomati district. Congress leaders have strongly criticized the ruling party, alleging that political protection of influential individuals is emboldening criminals. The CPI(M) has also demanded an impartial probe and accountability for lapses within the police.
