Benchmark domestic equity indices, Sensex and Nifty, opened on a positive note and extended their initial gains to end almost 0.4 per cent higher today. The Sensex surged 313 points to close at 82 thousand and 694, while Nifty advanced 91 points, to settle at 25 thousand 330. The broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed in positive zone. The Mid-Cap index gained almost 0.2 per cent, while Small-Cap index moved up half a per cent.
In the Sensex pack, 20 out of 30 companies edged upward. Among the top gainers, SBI surged three percent, Bharat Electronics Limited rose almost 2.4 per cent and Kotak Bank added over 1.4 per cent. Among the top laggards, Bajaj Financial services as well as Titan both fell almost one per cent each, ITC dipped over 0.9 per cent and Tata Steel decreased over 0.4 per cent.
In Sectoral indices at the BSE, 14 out of 21 sectors logged gains. Among the top gainers, Capital goods surged almost one per cent, Bankex as well as Industrials both rose over 0.7 per cent each and IT added 0.7 per cent, Among the top laggards, Metal dipped half a per cent, Telecommunication lost over 0.4 per cent and Utilities slipped over 0.3 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,408 companies advanced, and shares of 1,746 companies declined, while shares of 174 companies remained unchanged.
