Benchmark domestic equity indices ended with modest losses today. The markets had opened in positive territory; however, they failed to hold initial gains and later slipped into the negative zone. The Sensex decreased 207 points, or 0.26 per cent to close at 80 thousand 158. Similarly, Nifty declined 45 points, or 0.18 per cent to settle at 24 thousand 580. Meanwhile, the broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange ended on a positive note. The Mid-Cap index advanced around 0.3 per cent, and the Small-Cap index added over 0.6 per cent.
In the Sensex pack, 15 out of 30 companies marched upward. Among the top gainers, Powergrid surged over 2.4 per cent, NTPC rose 1.6 per cent, and Tata Steel climbed over 1.4 per cent. Among the top laggards, Mahindra and Mahindra dropped over 2.4 per cent, Asian Paints dipped over 1.3 per cent, and Kotak Bank decreased nearly 1.3 per cent.
In Sectoral indices at the BSE, 11 out of 21 sectors logged gains. In the top gainers, Power rose over 1.6 per cent, Utilities climbed nearly one and a half per cent, and FMCG added over 1.1 per cent. Among the top laggards, Bankex dipped nearly 0.7 per cent, Telecommunication dropped almost 0.6 per cent, and Financial Services lost over 0.4 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,531 companies advanced, and shares of 1,614 companies declined, while shares of 140 companies remained unchanged.
