Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Friday conducted a comprehensive review of the Manipur State Rural Livelihood Mission (MSRLM), focusing on the livelihood activities of rural communities across the state. The review meeting, held at Raj Bhavan, aimed to assess the progress of various development programmes, especially in light of the challenges faced by rural households in recent years.
According to a Raj Bhavan official, the Director of MSRLM along with senior officers made detailed presentations on the functioning of ongoing projects. The review covered multiple aspects including financial planning, manpower requirements, and strategies for expanding the mission’s reach to remote villages.
Focus on Rural Empowerment
A significant part of the review was dedicated to evaluating the performance of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), which play a vital role in empowering rural women and ensuring economic stability in villages. The Governor also emphasized the importance of Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs) that are providing vocational training to rural youth and women.
Special attention was given to programmes being implemented for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), particularly those affected by recent ethnic violence in Manipur. Training and livelihood support for displaced families have been integrated into the mission’s work to provide both immediate relief and long-term opportunities for self-reliance.
Governor Bhalla instructed officials to further strengthen the manpower of the MSRLM and extend its outreach to ensure that benefits of schemes reach the grassroots effectively. “Livelihood missions are most impactful when every section of society, especially the vulnerable, receives targeted support,” the official quoted him as saying.
Boost to Cancer Care Facilities
In addition to the MSRLM review, the Governor also held discussions with representatives of Karkinos Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., who updated him on the progress of the Karkinos Manipur Cancer Institute and Research Centre.
The officials from Karkinos highlighted the advanced facilities being developed at the institute, which is expected to bring transformative changes in cancer diagnosis and treatment in the region. They stressed that the centre would not only serve patients in Manipur but also cater to other Northeastern states, thereby strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the region. The project is also anticipated to create significant opportunities in the field of medical research and employment for local healthcare professionals.
Promoting Indigenous Sports and Culture
Later, members of the Manipur Equestrian Association met with Governor Bhalla to discuss initiatives aimed at developing equestrian sports and conserving the indigenous Manipuri Pony. Known for its historical and cultural significance, the Manipuri Pony has been closely associated with the traditional game of polo. The Governor assured the association of support in promoting equestrian activities and safeguarding the heritage of the breed.
National Sports Day Observed with Enthusiasm
On the occasion of National Sports Day, Governor Bhalla extended greetings to the people of Manipur, paying homage to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand Singh. He called upon the youth to draw inspiration from Dhyan Chand’s remarkable sportsmanship and dedication.
Meanwhile, the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science (PESS), Manipur University, in collaboration with the Fit India Campaign Committee, Fit India Club, and the National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, organized the Nationwide Celebration of Sports, Spirit & Unity at Dr. Kamal Indoor Stadium, Canchipur.
