Globally acclaimed Theatre personality Ratan Thiyam has passed away today after battling illness for a few days. Born in the Imphal West district of Manipur, Ratan Thiyam was hospitalised at RIMS hospital a few days back. He breathed his last in the early wee hours of today morning. He was 77 years.
Ratan Thiyam is known for his direction in the internationally acclaimed dramas like “Chakrabvyuha”, “Uttar Priyadarshi”, “Hey Nungshibi Prithivi”, “Chinglon Mapan Tampak ama”. He was honoured with the Fringe First Award in the Edinburgh International Festival 1987 for his play “Chakrabvyuha”.
Ratan Thiyam served as Chairperson of the National School of Drama. He also served as Vice Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Academy, New Delhi, apart from being a fellow of the Academy. The Government of India conferred him with the prestigious “Padamashree” in 1989 in recognition of his contribution to the field of Theatre. He was also honoured with the Sangeet Natak Academy award in 1987. Manipur Government also honoured him with the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was the founder of Chorus Repertory Imphal.
