Agartala, Nov 15: Tripura police unearthed a chain-snatching gang from the capital city and arrested five persons including two snatchers from different parts of the city on Monday, police official said.
The arrested persons were identified as, Amit Roy and Sagar Nama, both both habitual drug addicts, hailed from North Ananda Nagar under Srinagar Police Station, Amaresh Chakraborty of Tarika Palli and Mintu Das of South Ramnagar under West Agartala Police Station.
Addressing a press conference, Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ajay Kumar Das said, in the course of investigation of a gold necklace snatching case from Joynagar here in the last week of September, police got a clue about the racket and finally unearthed the racket on Monday.
He said, Policemen from West Police Station under supervision of Officer-in-charge, Investigating officer Abhijit Mandal carried out the operation along with Sub-inspector Ranjit Das, Mamanullah Kaji from Ramnagar Outpost conducted the raid and arrested two gold chain snatchers- Amrit Roy and Sagar Nama on Monday night. Some stolen gold chains were also recovered by police.
“After interrogation, we picked up two more persons- Amaresh Chakraborty and Mintu Das, an employee, who used to purchase the stolen gold items and take loan by given those ornaments to the managers of Manappuram Gold Loan without any document and verification,” the SDPO told reporters.
The manager- Riman Chakraborty, a resident of Santirbazar in South Tripura who used to give loan against the stolen items, was also arrested.
The SDPO said that it is being investigated whether any other gang or person is involved in this incident.
