Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has launched smart meters across the state to improve billing accuracy and empower consumers. TSECL MD Biswajit Basu emphasizes transparency, real-time tracking, and free installation to enhance service quality and eliminate overbilling, marking a major leap in electricity management.

Tripura has embarked on a transformative journey in electricity management with the introduction of smart meters by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL). Announced during a press conference on Friday at the Corporation’s Bhuturia office, this development marks a major milestone in the state’s efforts to modernize its power infrastructure and provide consumers with better control and transparency over their energy usage.

Addressing the media, TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu presented the smart meter as an innovative, communication-enabled device that puts the power of information directly into the hands of consumers. “Smart meters are a scientific leap designed solely for the benefit of consumers,” Basu stated. He emphasized their user-friendly design, ease of access through mobile apps and online platforms, and reassured consumers that these meters pose no threat of overbilling or unplanned service disruptions.

Tripura, with a consumer base of approximately 1.026 million electricity users, is rolling out this smart metering initiative as part of a broader push to make electricity services more responsive and technologically advanced. Basu revealed that smart meters are being installed not only in regular households and business establishments but also in the residences and offices of all state ministers. In a bid to lead by example and increase public awareness, TSECL is also installing smart meters in the homes of 2,700 of its own employees.

According to Basu, the smart meters offer a range of tangible benefits that are expected to significantly improve the consumer experience. These include real-time monitoring of electricity consumption, digital bill generation, and an end to the longstanding issues associated with manual meter readings and door lock situations. Importantly, they also eliminate estimated billing practices and enable more accurate and fair charges based strictly on actual usage.

“The installation of these meters means quicker responses to power outages as well,” Basu added, explaining that the meters automatically notify TSECL in case of disruptions, allowing for faster maintenance and service restoration. “This is a step forward for a tech-driven energy future in Tripura,” he said.

One of the most consumer-friendly aspects of this initiative is that the installation of the smart meters is being carried out at no cost to the end user. The TSECL has committed to a state-wide rollout without placing any financial burden on residents or business owners.

In addressing concerns about the initiative, Basu was firm in rejecting misinformation circulating in some quarters. He urged citizens not to be misled by rumors or misconceptions. “Our goal is transparency, efficiency, and consumer empowerment. This project has been planned and executed entirely in the public interest,” he assured.

Smart meters are expected to play a crucial role in reshaping the way electricity is consumed, billed, and managed in the state. With daily consumption data readily available to consumers, households can better manage their energy use, potentially leading to cost savings and more sustainable electricity consumption patterns.

Tripura’s bold step toward digitization and energy efficiency aligns with national goals of smart infrastructure and digital governance. By taking a proactive stance and demonstrating leadership in utility reform, TSECL is not just modernizing its systems but also creating a model that other states might emulate.

As Tripura transitions into a smarter energy landscape, the initiative promises to deliver not just operational benefits to the corporation, but also a more informed, empowered, and satisfied customer base—one that is ready to embrace the digital future.
