In view of the gang rapes that hit the headlines for the last one week across the state political parties took to roads demanding immediate and exemplary actions against the culprits, even though some of the identified rapists were already arrested.
Almost all political parties and their students, youth organizations resorted to agitation programmes and gheraoed the police stations, or submitted deputations to the officers in charge.
In Kailasahar Bishnupriya Manipuri community elders also brought out a march demanding exemplary punishment for the rapists.
In one incident as a fall out shops and houses were ransacked in Kalyanpur and there were communal overtures. The situation however did not aggravate with time police action. TIPRA Motha chairman Pradyot Kishore Debbarman also visited to the areas.
In the meantime, the Communists, Trinamool Congress which was lying low for the last few months, also staged protest march.
On Saturday Tripura Pradesh Congress organized a protest rally in city alleging failure of Chief Minister Manik Saha in maintaining law and order situation and demanding his resignation. They also gheraoed the Chief Minister’s residence and complained that under his leadership there was a complete breakdown of law and order situation. The Congress workers also pointed out that while there were series of rape incidents there was also firing incident in the open in which two persons sustained bullet injuries.
“Police is acting at the behest of the ruling party and in many cases they even do not register FIRs”, alleged a Pradesh Youth Congress president Rakhu Das.
