Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Dr L Murugan, today inaugurated the medical check-up camp for ESI beneficiaries under Swasth Bharat Samridh Bharat at Chennai. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the health and wellness of every citizen is important for India. The Minister added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is concerned about the wellness factor of the citizens of the Country and has been underlining the importance of reducing oil content in foods. He asserted that recognising the importance of reducing obesity, the Prime Minister has been focusing on a healthy lifestyle by practising yoga, an ancient practice in India. He added that India is presently the fourth-largest economy and is expected to become the third-largest economy in 2027. He said that the Government aims to set up ESIC medical colleges in every district. He also informed that in the next five years, the Government aims to increase 75 thousand seats in medical colleges. Dr Murugan said that the government has been concerned about the needs of the economically backwards people and has introduced health insurance for five lakh rupees, which enables medical treatment for them. The Minister said that the ESIC in Chennai has been functioning effectively with thousands of beds. He also said that  13 crore people have benefited through 165 ESIC hospitals and 1590 dispensaries in the Country. Underlining the importance of quality medical care, the Minister added that there are 15 thousand Jan Aushadhi stores in the Country.
