CPI(M) to Launch Nationwide Campaign Against BJP’s ‘Neo-Fascism’: Jitendra Choudhury

Must Read

After 24th Party Congress, CPI(M) leader Jitendra Choudhury says Tripura is BJP’s experiment lab, vows mass resistance.

Newly inducted CPI(M) Politburo member and Leader of the Opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Jitendra Choudhury, on Tuesday termed the recently concluded 24th Party Congress of the CPI(M) as a “historic milestone” for the Left movement in India. Speaking to reporters in Agartala, Choudhury emphasized that the party had taken a firm resolution to unite all secular and democratic forces across the country to confront the BJP and its ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which he accused of “subverting constitutional values.”

Highlighting key takeaways from the four-day national conference held recently in Kerala, Choudhury said the CPI(M) will take a more proactive political role in the national discourse to counter the growing influence of what he described as “neo-fascist” tendencies under the Narendra Modi-led central government.

A ‘Hindu Rashtra’ Agenda?

In his strong-worded remarks, Choudhury alleged that the BJP, backed by the RSS, has for the past decade systematically worked towards dismantling the secular foundations of the Indian Constitution.

“The Narendra Modi government has undermined constitutional institutions and principles to pave the way for a Hindu Rashtra. This is not merely political rhetoric; it’s evident in their policy decisions, communal rhetoric, and attempts to control key democratic institutions,” he said.

Choudhury further claimed that the RSS’s ideological framework is being subtly pushed into the mainstream, thereby influencing governance and legislation in ways that threaten the pluralistic ethos of the country.

Tripura as a ‘Laboratory’

Turning his attention to the home state, Choudhury asserted that Tripura had become a testing ground for the BJP’s broader political project.

“In the last seven years, Tripura has been converted into a laboratory for political experiments that the BJP and RSS aim to replicate across India. This includes attacking dissent, crushing opposition voices, and manipulating state machinery,” he alleged.

He said that CPI(M) in Tripura is planning an aggressive outreach campaign to make people aware of the threats to democracy and their own socio-economic rights. “We are committed to building an exploitation-free society where all citizens can live with dignity,” he added.

A Call for United Opposition

Choudhury reiterated the CPI(M)’s commitment to building a united front with all secular and democratic forces to defeat the BJP at both the state and national levels.

“Our party congress made it abundantly clear — this is not just a battle for political survival; it’s a battle to save the idea of India. We are ready to work with like-minded parties, social movements, student bodies, and civil society groups to create a united platform to fight communalism and authoritarianism,” he stated.

He also hinted at more grassroots-level mobilization and mass protests in the coming months, focusing on issues such as price rise, unemployment, suppression of civil liberties, and privatization of public assets.

Background: The 24th CPI(M) Party Congress

The 24th Party Congress of the CPI(M), held in Madurai, saw several strategic decisions taken in light of the current political climate. The Congress elected a new Politburo, inducted younger leaders, and passed multiple resolutions targeting the BJP’s policies on economy, foreign relations, and civil liberties. A major emphasis was laid on strengthening Left unity and forming broader alliances to resist right-wing forces electorally and ideologically.

Jitendra Choudhury’s elevation to the Politburo marks a significant moment for Tripura’s Left movement, symbolizing a renewed focus on strengthening the party’s base in the Northeast.

As the 2024 general elections recede into the background and state-level battles come into sharper focus, Choudhury’s comments signal the CPI(M)’s intent to be at the forefront of a broader resistance to what it perceives as an existential crisis for Indian democracy.
