In a landmark move, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has embarked on setting up its first-ever hospital- Agartala Civil Hospital-marking a significant step in enhancing healthcare services within the city. The proposed 50-bed facility will be located adjacent to the multi-storied building on the premises of the old municipal office, east of Jackson Gate. This initiative aims to alleviate the mounting pressure on existing medical institutions, particularly GBP Hospital, which serves as a crucial healthcare hub for the state.
This development comes as part of a broader strategy by the Tripura government to improve healthcare accessibility. Plans are already underway to establish a network of satellite hospitals around Agartala, ensuring decentralized medical services and reducing the burden on major referral hospitals like GBP and IGM.
Foundation Stone Laid by Chief Minister
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha formally laid the foundation stone for the new hospital on Thursday . The event saw the presence of prominent dignitaries, including AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder, Health Secretary and senior IAS officer Kiran Gitte, AMC Commissioner DR Sailesh Yadav along with a large audience of local residents and officials.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Saha lauded AMC’s proactive step in launching the hospital, emphasizing its role in strengthening healthcare infrastructure. “Our government has placed a high priority on healthcare services, ensuring that hospitals and community health centers are equipped with the latest technology for optimal patient care. In addition to this AMC hospital, we are also committed to establishing a network of satellite hospitals around Agartala to improve accessibility and efficiency in medical services,” he stated.
Mayor Dipak Majumder echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the growing role of civic bodies in providing essential services beyond traditional municipal functions. “Major urban centers must step up in delivering healthcare solutions. This hospital is just the beginning of our efforts to enhance medical services at the city level,” he remarked.
A Step Towards Strengthening Urban Healthcare
The establishment of AMC’s first hospital represents a significant shift in municipal governance, expanding its role beyond urban planning and sanitation to include critical public health initiatives. As Agartala’s population grows, such initiatives will play a key role in addressing healthcare challenges, ensuring timely medical intervention, and reducing dependency on overstretched government hospitals.
With the state government’s continued focus on healthcare expansion and infrastructure improvement, the AMC’s hospital is expected to set a precedent for other municipal bodies in Tripura, paving the way for a more decentralized and accessible healthcare system.
