The state-level International Women’s Day celebration was held with great enthusiasm under the leadership of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha. The event, organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education at Rabindra Bhawan, highlighted the government’s efforts toward women’s socio-economic development and self-reliance.
Women’s Safety and Welfare a Top Priority
Addressing the gathering, CM Saha reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring women’s rights and safety. He stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the central government has prioritized women’s self-empowerment and socio-economic progress. The state is actively working in the same direction, focusing on enhancing women’s self-confidence and reducing abuse. A documentary showcasing various welfare initiatives for women and children was also screened during the event.
The Chief Minister cited the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, highlighting that Tripura ranks below the 8th position in crimes against women. To strengthen women’s safety, the state has launched a toll-free helpline, Women Helpline 181, ensuring immediate assistance. Additionally, a 100-bed mother-and-child care facility is being set up at GBP Hospital to enhance maternal and child healthcare.
Financial Empowerment Through Self-Help Groups
To promote financial independence among women, the state government has formed 53,623 self-help groups (SHGs) under the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM). In the financial year 2017-18, SHGs received only ₹32.67 crore, whereas from 2018-19 onwards, ₹714.16 crore has been disbursed. Similarly, bank loans to women have seen a significant increase from ₹4.95 crore before 2017-18 to ₹1,465.8 crore since 2018.
Promotion of Traditional Art and Education Support
The government has successfully secured the GI tag for Risa—a traditional handwoven cloth made by tribal women—and the renowned Pera Prasad of Matabari, boosting women-led businesses. The state is also prioritizing education for female students. Admission, college development, and examination fees for undergraduate and postgraduate students have been waived. Additionally, around 1,22,500 female students in Class 9 have received free bicycles. Women pursuing higher education in national institutions can avail of student loans at just a 3% interest rate.
Honoring Women Achievers and Contributors
During the event, Minister for Social Welfare and Social Education, Tinku Roy, elaborated on various programs conducted statewide as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations. A total of 21 women and three self-help groups were honored for their excellence in different fields.
CM Saha presented certificates, mementos, and cheques to three Anganwadi workers and three Anganwadi helpers. Awards were also given to three Child Development Project Officers (CDPOs), three ICDS supervisors, two female police constables, and one Special Police Officer (SPO).
The event commenced with a welcome speech by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education, followed by a vote of thanks from Jharna Debbarma, Chairperson of the Tripura Women’s Commission. Other dignitaries present included Jayanti Debbarma, Chairperson of the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights; Tapan Kumar Das, Director of Social Welfare and Social Education Department; De Bishal Kumar, DM & Collector of West Tripura District; and Dr. Kiran Kumar K., Superintendent of Police of West Tripura District.
