A delegation of Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) met the Chief Election Commissioner of Election Commission of India at Delhi on Thursday and demanded for close monitoring of the ensuing elections in the state.

The delegation comprised on TPCC president Birjit Sinha, congress leader Sudip Roy Barman , incharge of the state Dr Ajay Kumar and others from AICC.

TPCC President Birjit Sinha told reporters that during the meeting the congress delegation had apprised the ECI of the current situation of Tripura. “We complained to him about the deteriorating law and order situation in Tripura,” Sinha said, alleging that there is no atmosphere prevailing in Tripura where elections can be conducted.

He alleged, “The BJP cadres are launching regular attacks upon the workers and supporters of the opposition parties in the state and leaving no stone unturned in ruining the election atmosphere.”

“We demanded the ECI to send a powerful team during the ensuing by-election in Tripura and closely monitor the situation and help people exercise their franchise,” Sinha told reporters.

ICC Tripura in-charge Ajoy Kumar said, “We have told the election commissioner that in the present situation to conduct a free and fair polls in Tripura is near impossible.”

In local body polls, over 1,000 posts went uncontested because of the BJP and its “goondas”, he alleged.

“We have given some suggestions like central police forces, certain duties at the booth level. We are hopeful that the chief election commissioner will take action on the request we have made,” Kumar said
