Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, alleging that Congress workers are maligning CPI(M) despite its support during previous elections. Addressing a party gathering at Kailasahar, Chaudhury claimed that the CPI(M)’s backing was instrumental in the Congress candidate Birajit Sinha’s victory in the 2023 general assembly election.

Chaudhury asserted that Congress owes its success in capturing the Gaurnagar Panchayat Samiti during the three-tier Panchayat elections in August 2023 to CPI(M) workers. “The Congress party would not have gained power without our support. They have now forgotten our contributions,” he said.

The CPI(M) leader further accused the Congress party, like the TIPRA Motha Party, of indirectly working to benefit the BJP in Kailasahar. “The Congress party’s actions are weakening the opposition unity and aiding the BJP’s agenda,” he observed.

Switching focus to the ruling BJP, Chaudhury criticized the Modi-led central government for its policies, particularly targeting the agricultural sector. He accused the government of ignoring farmers’ demands while favoring big capitalists. “The Modi government has waived loans of corporate giants but has failed to address farmers’ calls for loan waivers, leaving them in distress,” he alleged.

Former Chief Minister and CPI(M) Politburo member Manik Sarkar also addressed the gathering. Sarkar attacked both the BJP and TIPRA Motha while highlighting rural development issues. He accused the central government of reducing funds for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), depriving the poor in rural areas of their livelihoods. “The BJP government’s failure to support rural welfare programs exposes its disregard for the country’s poor,” Sarkar remarked.

Both leaders emphasized that the BJP-led government’s policies are widening inequality and neglecting the needs of farmers, laborers, and rural communities. The CPI(M) called upon workers to unite and resist the ruling party’s anti-people policies.
