Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Ajoy Tamta, announced plans to upgrade the two-lane stretches of National Highways in Tripura to four lanes, in a bid to improve connectivity and support regional growth. He highlighted that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are already under preparation for certain highway sections.

In a press conference at the State Guest House in Agartala on Thursday, Tamta emphasized that the central government is prioritizing infrastructure development in the northeastern states, including Tripura. A Multilevel Logistics Park is also being considered to strengthen the state’s logistics network. During his visit, Tamta met with Tripura’s Chief Minister, Dr. Manik Saha, discussing a shared vision for the state’s development, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on border-state growth and connectivity.

Minister Tamta reiterated the government’s commitment to northeastern development, particularly since 2014, when Prime Minister Modi took office. He noted the central government’s emphasis on upgrading infrastructure, including roadways, electricity, water, and healthcare facilities. “Since Prime Minister Modi assumed office, the bordering states have seen prioritized development, with special attention on creating better road infrastructure,” he stated.

The Union Minister further mentioned that regular visits by central ministers to northeastern states, including Tripura, are aimed at facilitating on-the-ground problem-solving and project oversight. One significant initiative under discussion is transforming Tripura into a gateway for Southeast Asia, enhancing trade routes and connectivity with neighboring regions.

Addressing flood-damaged roads in the state, Tamta shared that the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) currently manages 750 kilometers of the state’s 793 kilometers of National Highways. Additionally, Tamta visited the Bamboo & Cane Development Institute to explore avenues for promoting local industries.

Later in his tour, Tamta held a review meeting at Khowai with District Magistrate Chandni Chandran and other officials, evaluating the progress of several ongoing projects. He highlighted the importance of development within the aspirational blocks and participated in the inauguration of the Panchayat Resource Centre’s conference hall at Padmabil Block. He also engaged in discussions with women Self-Help Group (SHG) members and inspected various stalls.

The visit concluded with the inauguration of a Public Library at Khirodnagar ADC Village and a site inspection of NH 208B at Upendranagar, showcasing the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure in Tripura.
